That distinction - Jerusalem, not Israel - reflects the US position that the city's fate is an issue for Israelis and Palestinians to work out through future peace negotiations.

Trump would obviously be thrilled - as would we all - if he could negotiate peace between Israelis and Palestinians.

The official, who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity, said the Trump administration does not want to complicate attempts to resume the Israeli-Palestinian peace process by announcing the embassy move.

President Donald Trump has decided he will not announce plans to move the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem during his trip to Israel next week, two administration officials told CNN Wednesday.

During their run for president, former presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush also pledged to move the US embassy but failed to do so. According to BuzzFeed News, the Israeli officials say "their worst fears" have been confirmed.

"This is the most appropriate way to show the proper deference to such a significant holy site", a State Department official said.

Sources told the newspaper that Bannon believes the embassy move was a promise to Trump's strongly right-wing nationalist base, while cabinet officials worry that moving the embassy would have negative repercussions.

Wow. What an uninformed statement, especially considering that every president - starting with Harry Truman - has tried to broker a Middle East peace deal since Israel became a state in 1948. Netanyahu made a passionate speech to a joint meeting of the U.S. Congress in March 2015 to try to derail the Iran nuclear deal that Obama supported.

Trump said as a candidate he would move the embassy to Jerusalem, but now says he's studying the issue.
