  • Trump Interviewing FBI Candidates Lieberman

White House spokesman Sean Spicer told reporters aboard Air Force One that President Donald Trump would meet with Keating, acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe, former Connecticut Sen.

Since leaving the Senate, Lieberman has been a senior counsel at the NY law firm Kasowitz, Benson, Torres & Friedman LLP and serves on a number of boards.

As Politico points out, Lieberman being the president's possible pick to head the Federal Bureau of Investigation would be an "unorthodox" one.

Lieberman, who President Donald Trump interviewed on Wednesday, was the vice presidential running mate when Democrat Al Gore ran for the White House in 2000.

Trump met with four candidates for the top law enforcement job on Wednesday, including Lieberman, and reportedly bonded with the former Democratic vice presidential candidate, Politico reported citing a person familiar with the meeting. The president has suggested he hopes to name Comey's successor before he departs Friday for his first overseas trip as president.

Trump's choice must win Senate confirmation amid the Justice Department's investigation into Russia's election hacking and the Trump campaign's possible involvement. During the 2016 presidential election, he endorsed former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

The meetings come more than a week after Trump fired FBI Director James Comey.

Lieberman, while in the Senate, served two separate stints as chair of the Senate Homeland Security Committee from 2001-2003 and a third stint from 2007-2013.

Lieberman was Connecticut's attorney general decades ago. At a Democratic Senator lunch on Thursday, Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin (D., Ill.) and others criticized the pick.

First elected in 1988, Lieberman served as a Democrat until 2006, when he became an independent who caucused with the Democrats. John McCain, and did not seek re-election in 2012. He was the lead case agent on the Oklahoma City federal building bombing in 1995, when Keating was governor, and he was the FBI's on-scene commander after the September 11, 2001, attack on the Pentagon.
