Michael Flynn not cooperating in Senate Intelligence Committee's Russian Federation probe

"General Flynn's attorneys have not yet indicated their intentions regarding the Senate Intelligence Committee's subpoena", Burr said in a statement.

Senators slapped Flynn with a subpoena last week in their investigation into ties between President Donald Trump's campaign associates and Russian interference.

Flynn resigned on February 13 at the request of President Trump after it was revealed Flynn had discussed sanctions with the Russian ambassador and misled the Vice President and other administration officials about the nature of his conversations with Kislyak.

The committee issued the subpoena for Flynn's records on May 10 after he declined to cooperate with an April 28 request for documents.

Update 5/18/17 1:55 pm: The Associated Press has now reported a correction of an earlier story, after a Senate Committee clarified that they had not received a response from Michael Flynn's legal team.

That same day, Flynn told friends, "I just got a message from the president to stay strong", Yahoo News reports.

As national security adviser, Flynn held several phone calls with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak before Trump's inauguration and immediately after.

Because Congress can not force U.S. Attorneys to do its bidding, if a U.S. Attorney refuses-as the U.S. Attorney who received the contempt certification against Holder did-it might have to fall back on its inherent contempt authority. President Trump brought him on anyway.

Nina Ginsberg, a veteran Washington defense attorney with extensive experience in national security cases, said that without an ironclad immunity deal from the committee, Flynn would be exposed to questioning from investigators about any personal documents he gave up. Trump later deleted and retweeted that statement to correct the spelling of "counsel". Texas Republican Mike Conaway and California Democrat Adam Schiff said they will continue to work with the FBI as the investigation moves forward.

White House lawyers had repeatedly warned Trump not to contact Flynn.

The Justice Department has appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller (MUHL'-ur) as a special counsel to lead a federal investigation into allegations that Donald Trump's campaign collaborated with Russian Federation to sway the 2016 election that put him in the White House.

Flynn is separately being investigated by the Defense Department's inspector general.
