National Football League expected to allow two injured reserve returns

  • Jacksonville owner Shad Khan left and New England owner Robert Kraft will be at the May league meetings next week

According to NFL.com, owners will meet next week in Chicago and vote on at least two proposals.

The NFL is reportedly expected to approve a pair of rules changes next week. The I.R. -return rule forces a player to miss six weeks before practicing and eight weeks before being eligible to return to playing games. May.

NFL Network's Judy Battista reported Wednesday that at next week's Spring League Meeting, owners plan to vote on a proposal allowing a second player to come off injured reserve in a season.

Teams will be allowed to bring a second player off injured reserve. What will likely end up happening is that more overtime games will end up in ties. Adding another returning player benefits team flexibility and pushes off hard decisions on potentially shutting down injured players.

What's your take? Is this a good move for the NFL?

15 minutes gives both teams ample time to go down the field and hit a field goal to extend the overtime period.

That isn't the only significant change potentially being made next week, but the owners are also voting on changing the overtime period from 15 to 10 minutes in the regular season.

Now teams can actually think about the clock and time of possession in overtime, rather than just going drive by drive to score or match the first score. Any rule that makes the opportunity for ties to occur isn't popular with the fans by any means, and I can agree with that.

The Bengals lead the National Football League in ties over the last 15 years, and all three came under Marvin Lewis' watch.
