North Korea Celebrates Test Of New, Long-Range Missile

In April it put dozens of missiles on show at a giant military parade through the capital, including one that appeared to be the type launched on Sunday.

US experts said Sunday's launch was likely a mobile, two-stage, liquid-fueled missile that North Korea displayed in a huge April 15 military parade.

North Korea Monday celebrated the launch of what appeared to be its longest-range ballistic missile yet tested in a bid to bring the USA mainland within reach, saying it was capable of carrying a "heavy nuclear warhead".

Monday morning, Putin called the test "counter-productive and unsafe".

The missile flew 489 miles on a trajectory reaching an altitude of 1,312 miles, KCNA said.

Pyongyang has regularly threatened to destroy the United States, which it accuses of pushing the Korean peninsula to the brink of nuclear war by conducting recent military drills with South Korea and Japan.

The council adopted two sanctions resolutions previous year to ramp up pressure on Pyongyang and deny leader Kim Jong-Un the hard currency needed to fund his military programs.

Washington and Tokyo called for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council, which was scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.

If North Korea launches a rocket on a lofted trajectory - an angle higher than normal - "there's no guarantee that even the new interceptor we are developing with the USA can shoot it down", former Defense Minister Gen Nakatani told The Nikkei Monday.

"The Secretary-General condemns the launch of another ballistic missile by the DPRK", Guterres's spokesman said in a statement.

"This launch constitutes a flagrant violation of U.N. Security Council Resolutions". Traditionally, the United States and China have negotiated new measures before involving remaining council members.

It's boasting that this rocket can carry a large and heavy nuclear warhead. They've failed to stop the North's progress, which includes five nuclear test explosions since 2006.

Trump warned in an interview with Reuters this month that a "major, major conflict" with North Korea was possible. Pyongyang's actions are also seen as a threat by its neighbors, Japan and South Korea, and their allies, such as the United States.

"It appears to have not only demonstrated an intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) that might enable them to reliably strike the USA base at Guam, but more importantly, may represent a substantial advance to developing an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM)", Schilling wrote.

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley warned Sunday that the worldwide community will "continue to tighten the screws" around the North Korean regime.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull told reporters in Sydney on Monday that North Korea's conduct was "reckless", "provocative" and "unlawful".

However, while THAAD's installation by the USA last month has been largely criticized by China-which has made claims the U.S.is only increasing tensions in the region and potentially could use the system's radar to spy on China-it did prove successful in detecting the North's latest in a number of tests that are escalating in frequency.

The U.S. military said that it detected the launch and that flight data indicated it was not an intercontinental ballistic missile.

The escalating tensions came the day after a top North Korean diplomat said Pyongyang would be willing to meet with the Trump administration for negotiations "if the conditions are set".
