Sen. Joe Lieberman is Trump's pick to lead Federal Bureau of Investigation, according to reports

  • 2011 then-Sen. Joseph Lieberman I-Conn. speaks to reporters as he arrives on Capitol Hill in Washington. White House press secretary Sean Spicer says President Donald Trump will be meeting later Wednesday

Lieberman, who is Jewish and staunchly pro-Israel, is a former independent senator from CT, who ran on a ticket with Democrat Al Gore in 2000.

Joe Lieberman (I.) is reportedly the frontrunner to replace fired Director James Comey as head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The president also told the group that he was close to a decision, an assertion he repeated later at a joint appearance with President Juan Manuel Santos of Colombia. John Cornyn of Texas, the No. 2 Republican in the Senate, said Lieberman "may be the only potential nominee that could get 100 votes that I know of".

Keating served as governor of Oklahoma from 1995-2003 and was appointed to the OU Board of Regents in March.

Former FBI Director Robert Mueller was assigned by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to "oversee the previously-confirmed FBI investigation of Russian government efforts to influence the 2016 presidential election, and related matters".

Another partner in the same firm is David Friedman, Trump's new ambassador to Israel.

But Senator Claire McCaskill, a Democrat from Missouri, rejected the idea of any politician leading the department, which requires Senate confirmation.

Lieberman told CNN on Wednesday that the news he was being considered for the appointment "was not sought after or expected", and the phone call Tuesday asking him to fly into Washington came as a surprise.

In 1998, Lieberman gave a scathing critique of President Bill Clinton over his affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky on the floor of the Senate. The president has suggested he hopes to name Comey's successor before he departs Friday for his first overseas trip as president.

Flynn was sacked after it was revealed that he misled administration officials, including Vice President Mike Pence, about the nature of his conversations with Russian officials, including Russia's Ambassador to the U.S. Sergey Kislyak, prior to Trump's inauguration.

Press Secretary Sean Spicer informed reporters about the meetings as Trump flew to Washington after addressing U.S. Coast Guard Academy graduates in CT. A White House official said the discussion "centered around the nuts and bolts of how the investigation would work - and how the administration will need to handle the inquiry".

Several other candidates have withdrawn from consideration: Rep. Trey Gowdy of SC and Sen.
