Severe weather forecast later Thursday

19 May, 2017, 05:33 | Author: Nadine Todd
  • Severe weather possible both Monday and Tuesday

According the Associated Press, the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla., has classified Thursday's storm chances as high risk in parts of Oklahoma and Kansas - the most severe risk category.

Severe storms are expected to produce strong tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds. Severe damage to buildings is also reported in Phillipsburg, Phillips County, Kansas, though there are no estimates of the number of buildings affected at this time.

In Kansas, the state's Division of Emergency Management announced via Twitter that it activated the Emergency Operations Center in Topeka ahead of the severe storms. Tornadoes are not expected to be the main threat, but will be possible with any severe storm.

A chance of severe weather exists for the KVOE listening area late Tuesday afternoon into the evening.

Some of the hailstones from the most violent storms could reach the size of baseballs.

"The greatest risk of severe thunderstorms, up to a moderate risk, will exist along and northwest of I-44, with hail up to the size of baseballs, damaging winds to 75 miles per hour, and a limited potential for strong tornadoes", forecasters in Tulsa said.

More than two dozen tornado sightings were reported to the National Weather Service Tuesday night across the five states of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska and Wisconsin.

Critical fire weather conditions are forecast today.

Berc said the low population of the area makes the volunteer network an important resource for obtaining reports of severe weather. Conversely, if temperatures can rise to the lower 80s then the severe threat may be higher than depicted, the weather service said. Damaging wind and large hail possible with the storms.

A separate area of severe thunderstorms can develop along the northern edge of building warmth from eastern South Dakota through southern Minnesota, northern Iowa and into central Wisconsin from late Monday to Monday night.

The chance of thunderstorms will return Thursday night and remain through Saturday morning.

The National Weather service warns that residents of all areas should be careful about weather, regardless of warning level. "Flooding may also be a factor with a general 1-3" with this storm system so those that got heavy rain from the storm system last night into today will be prone to flooding first. Mostly cloudy with a high near 85.

UPDATE 4:27 p.m. - The National Weather Service has issues a tornado watch for Cleveland County until 8 p.m.

Tonight as skies continue to clear winds will gradually diminish from gusts up to 25 miles per hour before midnight and less than 10 miles per hour after midnight. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible. Saturday: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. While a few inches of slush is piling up in Denver and its nearby suburbs, higher elevations are getting dumped on with upwards of 2 feet of snow.
