Steelers release TE Green, LS Warren after failed physicals

The Steelers' $20 million tight end experiment has come to an end after one season.

Still, there was a report from Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Ed Bouchette just prior to the draft that the Steelers coaches might not have much hope for Green, and clearly Thursday's transaction confirmed that.

Former Penn State tight end Jesse James has developed into the starter for Pittsburgh, with David Johnson working behind him. With plenty of contracts expiring and big names hitting the free agent market, the Steelers could be looking a few different roster changes during the 2018 offseason.

By releasing Warren, the Steelers are pledging their future to Holba. Certainly, this move is a surprise, as Green had participated in the most recent portion of OTAs with the team, but the reason why - designation failed physical - isn't a shock. Green dealt with the lingering effects from concussions that caused him to miss 10 games in 2016.

Even though the 6-6 pass catcher played only six games last season because of concussion issues, Green was expected to recover and return. His best game was against the New York Giants with six catches for 110 yards and a touchdown.

And as has been talked about on and off this offseason, he has played a critical role in the rapid maturation of the Steelers' two rookie starters in the secondary past year. He also had a tendency to get lost in the passing game from time to time, but despite this, he still produced well enough to warrant 13 starts last season. His best season was 2015 when he caught 37-492-7.

The Steelers also announced they signed running back Terrell Watson. He had 28 yards and a touchdown on nine carries in Week 17 action for the Eagles and was waived on May 4.
