The House Oversight Committee is inviting Comey to testify

19 May, 2017, 10:24 | Author: Mae Harvey

Donald Trump has kept in touch with Mike Flynn, his former national security adviser who was forced out of the job after 24 days because he misled Vice President Mike Pence about conversations he had with Russian officials, a new report claims.

Flynn, who ended up being fired from the position after just 24 days, is at the center of a sprawling federal investigation into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 USA presidential election. "When we get to the bottom of it, then we can make the appropriate decisions, and sometimes those are difficult and hard decisions you have to make".

According to the note, which associates of Comey have shared with the media, Trump asked to speak to Comey privately in the Oval Office after a national security meeting.

The White House denied Comey's version of what happened, saying that "the president has never asked Mr. Comey or anyone else to end an investigation, including any investigation involving Gen. Flynn". But it comes at a moment when the credibility of the White House is already being questioned. The hearing is expected to looking specifically at Trump's influence on the investigation into Trump, his allies and their connections to Russian Federation.

Trump repeatedly tried, without success, to get Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey to drop the probe into Flynn.

"Well, I respect the move but the entire thing has been a witch hunt", Trump said when asked about the investigation. That conduct would be outrageous even if it proved unsuccessful and the investigation continued anyway.

"Last week, the President tweeted a message implying that the White House may have recordings of interactions with Mr. Comey", wrote the ranking members of the committee, seemingly referring to Trump's May 12th tweet warning about "tapes" of conversations with Comey. Cummings also said Comey had indicated in the past that if he were to testify before Congress, he would do so based on his own terms.
