Thompson takes early lead at Kingsmill Championship

  • Lexi Thompson left walks with her caddie Kevin Mc Alpine to the ninth tee during the first round of the Kingsmill Championship LPGA golf tournament in Williamsburg Va. Thursday

"I feel good about my game and I am looking forward to the week", said the soft-spoken youngster, who also played the Olympics previous year.

She made the cuts in all three, except one where she made the second round cut but missed the third round cut.

But she steadied on the back nine with successive birdies at the 15th and 16th holes. "I have always been a very good putter and it helps a lot on the LPGA because there are a lot of players who are nearly doing the same thing, hitting fairways and hitting greens so sometimes I feel like the only way to make the difference is if you putt well", she said. "It was just a feeling of, well, freedom". But the only way I would jump out of a perfectly good plane is with a SEAL on my back.

The season's top overall field will tee it up at the Kingsmill Championship Presented by JTBC beginning on Thursday in an attempt to create some momentum heading into the LPGA Tour's longest and most demanding stretch of events.

"I kept it in play, which was nice", she said. "For it to have happened so early and for it to have happened, it's something I'm very fortunate about".

World No. 1 Lydia Ko was tied for fifth at 4-under. Fifty-five women posted red numbers on a warm, breezy day along the lower James River.

Thompson hit 17 of 18 greens in regulation.

"I have been working on a lot of different aspects this year and my game feels good", Aditi told TOI on the eve of the $1.3m event.

"I think it's best I've ever seen it", Lincicome said about the course. The greens are true and fast and some have a lot of undulations, too. "If you get above the hole, you've got to be really careful". "The greens are rolling phenomenal". Giulia Molinaro, tied for fifth at 4 under, called them "amazing. absolutely incredible".

Karrie Webb and Katherine Kirk both shot even-par 71 while Sarah Kemp had a three-over par 74.

With Thailand's world number three Ariya Jutanugarn, the defending champion at Kingsmill, also lurking behind, Ko, 20, could see her 82-week run as number one come to an end this week if either of her rivals finishes ahead of her.
