Tories `leading fightback against SNP´ with major gains in local elections

  • GETTYMs Davidson's new analysis will ruffle feathers at the SNP

But she insisted the SNP had "won this election comfortably" with her party ending up with "more votes, more seats, more councils where we are the largest party, not just compared to every other party but compared to five years ago".

We have heard all of Ms Sturgeon's lines before - only the SNP will act as a bulwark against the Tories, only a vote for the SNP is a vote for Scotland, and so on.

"But let's take the Tory argument at face value".

Susan Aitken reveals that she and her deputy, David McDonald, were in informal contact with COSLA ahead of the elections, and that further talks are now scheduled to put the reconciliation on a formal footing.

The SNP leader said Theresa May would win the election and the SNP would "stand up for Scotland" at Westminster while the Tories would follow the Prime Minister.

Scottish Conservative candidate Kirstene Hair has launched the party's bid to win Angus on June 8 using last week's council election results in the region as a springboard for further gains.

And this is where we'll be until June 8th and most likely for some time after that, two entrenched camps - unionist and nationalist - shouting at one another about the constitution.

Former Glasgow Labour MP Tom Harris told Sky News his old party was suffering as a result of the Scottish independence debate.

Scottish Labour leader Kezia Dugdale said the selection of Mr McDougall shows that her party is "fighting hard to deliver a Labour government on the side of working people". The Tories, who previously had no councillors in the area, gained two and there were also two independents elected.

He put his victory down to opposition to another Scottish independence referendum. "And people across this country don't take kindly to Nicola Sturgeon pretending the opposite is true". It is the first time a Tory has been elected there.

"We wait to see what the future of unionism is going to be north of the Border".

"The local elections are now behind us".

The main one is Robertson's healthy 9000 majority (though the SNP of all parties should know that no majority is safe when a tide has turned having wiped out bigger Labour leads in 2015), bolstered by his increased profile since the SNP became the third party in the Commons and cemented by the fact he is a brilliant campaigner who has masterminded most of the SNP's success at the ballot box in recent years.

Ms Sturgeon said: "I'm over the moon that we are the largest party in Glasgow and are about to form an administration in the city".

He said it would be a "major moment" for the SNP if it wins power in the "iconic" city of Glasgow, which has been part of Labour's traditional Scottish heartlands. Basing its calculations partly on "notional" results the BBC said the SNP were actually down by seven, but it didn't really matter: the SNP vote had held up, and held up well.

With exactly one month to go until the general election, Ms Sturgeon said that without a strong SNP voice for Scotland at Westminster the Tories will think they have a free hand to negotiate any Brexit deal - or crash out of Europe without a deal - in the months and years to come.
