Trump allies come up with the wrong response to the Comey bombshell

Democratic politicians have been making the case for impeachment across the mainstream media ever since Trump's interview last week with NBC News's Lester Holt, when he said the decision to fire the Federal Bureau of Investigation director was his alone and that he was considering "the Russian Federation thing" when he handed down the dismissal directive via a letter delivered by the president's longtime security guard.

US President Donald Trump asked James Comey to end the investigation into former national security adviser, Michael Flynn, a request documented in a memo written by the former FBI director, according to sources familiar with the matter.

"We're going to walk and chew gum at the same time". In any impeachment proceeding, the Senate would effectively hold a trial to determine guilt.

Editor's note: An earlier version of this piece referenced Amash as the first Republican congressman to raise the possibility of impeachment.

The White House also strongly denied the claims in the Times.

House Speaker Paul RyanPaul RyanBusiness leaders to testify at House panel's tax reform hearing The Hill's 12:30 Report Dems try to force vote on independent Russian Federation probe MORE (R-Wis.) said Wednesday he had full confidence in President Trump as a handful of GOP lawmakers called for an independent commission or special prosecutor to probe a series of controversies related to Russia's meddling in the 2016 election.

Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader of the Senate, said simply, "It would be helpful to have less drama emanating from the White House".

Complaining about what he said was "political schizophrenia" in the United States, Putin said Trump was not being allowed to do his job properly. Adversity makes you stronger.

"I don't think it's time to talk about anything like that until we see the evidence", McCaskill told Fox News. Republicans and Democrats alike were eager to hear from Comey, who has increasingly emerged as a central figure in the unfolding drama.

Former Democratic Ohio Rep. Dennis Kucinich told Fox News on Tuesday that there was a "danger in engaging in compulsive opposition".

"For those who do not know, impeachment does not mean that the President would be found guilty".

"I determined that a special counsel is necessary in order for the American people to have full confidence in the outcome", he said.
