Trump denies he asked Comey to drop Flynn investigation

Elijah Cummings, D-Maryland, says Mueller is a "solid choice". He urged Mueller to follow the facts with "integrity and independence".

Trump's comments come after a brutal week-plus for the White House triggered by his firing of Comey, and near-daily bombshells about Flynn's shady activities, Trump's own continuing defense of his former top aide, and the evolving story from the White House about why Trump fired Comey.

While the Utah Republican has made his wish to have Comey testify public, he seems to have hit a snag extending the invitation to Comey personally. And Cummings is wondering why Chaffetz "is not doing the same here?"

He will head up the FBI's ongoing probe of "Russian government efforts to influence the 2016 presidential election and related matters", with the authority to prosecute crimes unearthed by the investigation. For them, it's the latest egregious example of mainstream media bias and of Washington insiders desperate to preserve their status taking revenge on the NY celebrity businessman.

Besieged by controversy at home, U.S. President Donald Trump is under pressure to stick to the script and avoid fresh flare-ups when he embarks this week on his first foreign trip, a nine-day trek to the Middle East and Europe.

But the fate of its investigation hinges on Ryan's lukewarm support and the sometimes fractious working relationship between its Republican and Democratic leaders.

"Trump began the discussion by condemning leaks to the news media, saying that Mr. Comey should consider putting reporters in prison for publishing classified information, according to one of Mr. Comey's associates", The New York Times said.

"However", he continued, "it is important that Congress call the former FBI Director James Comey before the Judiciary Committee to obtain a full understanding of what President Trump may or may not have done regarding the Russian investigation, including Gen. Michael Flynn". But he has set a hearing for May 24. The FBI has been looking into Flynn for months as part of a counterintelligence investigation.

Chaffetz has demanded that the Federal Bureau of Investigation turn over Comey's memos.

The comments by Maryland Rep. Elijah Cummings came as Democrats sought to force a House vote to establish an independent commission to investigate Donald Trump's ties to Russian Federation.

"The country deserves answers to the questions raised and former Director Comey deserves an opportunity to be heard and if appropriate, challenged", he said.
