  • Mercedes And Vivint Solar To Take On Tesla In The US

While there are now several companies manufacturing battery systems specifically to complement residential solar systems, Vivint Solar CEO David Bywater said Mercedes-Benz was chosen both for its reputation for quality and long-term commitment to energy innovation.

Mercedes-Benz is entering the budding market for home energy storage, partnering with solar installer Vivint Solar to offer home batteries to California residents this month.

Essentially, Mercedes is marrying its residential battery technology, which is based on the same designs that it uses for its electric and hybrid vehicles, with Vivint's existing home solar panel business.

Homeowners with the Mercedes-Benz energy storage system can utilize the energy to power their homes during peak electricity consumption hours-usually in the evening.

"With batteries featuring the best in automotive engineering from Mercedes-Benz, and high-quality solar energy systems from Vivint Solar, our solution allows customers to take the next step toward a sustainable energy future".

"Once the required permitting is secured by Vivint Solar, the physical installation of the entire system, including the solar panels and the battery, typically takes one to two days", Bywater's statement noted.

Homeowners can use the battery packs to store solar energy in order to use at night or when grid rates are higher, or they can also use the system for backup energy in case of a power outage.

"Adding storage is an obvious approach to improve the return on investment on a solar solution". Starting in Q2, California customers will be able to buy the offering outright or finance the purchase. Some other newer companies don't necessarily have this to offer their customers, giving Vivint and Mercedes a leg up. But before Tesla's acquisition of SolarCity in November, battery and solar installations were separate processes. For instance, Mercedez-Benz says that these batteries come with a 10 year warranty and are engineered to last a long time - after 10 years, capacity is only expected to decrease to 80%. A kilowatt-hour is the amount of electrical energy consumed when 1,000 watts are used for one hour.

At the same time, policy changes and proposals reducing incentives in Arizona, Indiana and other states have dimmed the prospects of rooftop solar. That means creating a system that keeps customers comfortable when they're home, but aggressively saves energy when they're not.
