  • Fox News CEO Roger Ailes poses at Fox News in New York. Fox News said on Thursday

Roger Ailes, who built Fox News into a conservative media empire and was a consultant for several Republican presidents before being ousted in a sexual harassment scandal a year ago, died today at the age of 77.

The cable network's hosts struggled to hold back tears as they read a statement from Mr Ailes' wife, Elizabeth, announcing his death yesterday.

"Roger Ailes founded one of the most important and successful media outlets in American history", said conservative radio host Laura Ingraham.

He was abruptly dismissed from Fox News in July 2016 in the wake of a lawsuit filed by former anchor Gretchen Carlson accusing Ailes of sexual improprieties.

Roger Ailes was defiant on his way out the door at Fox News 10 months ago, insisting that multiple sexual harassment allegations against him were "baseless", even as the network indicated otherwise.

Ailes began his television career in the early 1960s as a producer at The Mike Douglas Show in Cleveland, and went onto serve as media consultant for several Republican presidents, including Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan. In an independent investigation, Kelly told investigators that Ailes sexually harassed her in the past. A cause of death was not available Thursday, but Ailes was known to be in poor health.

"Today America lost one of its great patriotic warriors, Roger Ailes".

Murdoch ended the memo with prayers to Ailes' family: "At 21st Century Fox we will always be enormously grateful for the great business he built". He will be remembered by the many people on both sides of the camera he discovered, nurtured and promoted.

In her lawsuit, Carlson alleged that Ailes slashed her salary, cut down her television appearances and ultimately fired her as retribution for her refusal to accept sexual advances.

Numerous digital tributes to Ailes have been quite a bit sharper than such an occasion might usually call for. "And may he rest in peace", the lawmaker told CNN's Chris Cuomo Thursday on "New Day".

According to Guardian, Alies received a Dollars 40 million payout for his departure from Fox News and was to remain as a consultant to the network till 2018. More recently, he worked on debate preparations in the presidential campaign of now president, Donald Trump.

He developed into a titan of politics, the entertainment industry, and revolutionized broadcast news.

Few of the reactions on the right acknowledged the accusations levied against Ailes that led to his resignation at Fox News, and those that did chose to minimize them in a "nobody's perfect" fashion.
