This new measure will apply from the 2018 edition of the Festival International du Film de Cannes onwards.

Netflix, which streams films and television shows to subscribers, has two of the hottest movies in contention for the Palme d'Or - its first time in competition at the festival that France boasts is the greatest in the world.

Who is that - a celebrity photographer in the photographer pen at the first official photocall of the Cannes Film Festival 2017.

Almodovar took a tough line, telling reporters he could not imagine "the Palme d'Or nor any other prize being given to a film, and then not being able to see that film on a large screen". Well, the last question gets a sort-of answer, with the latest poster for Netflix's upcoming film.

French cinema owners delivered a "Zut!" chorus when they learned that The Mereyowitz Stories, written and directed by Noah Baumbach and starring Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller, Emma Thompson and Dustin Hoffman, won't appear on big screens outside the festival.

In France, rules state that once a film has had a cinema release, it can not be streamed online for three years - which is too long for subscribers to wait, says the streaming service.

Anticipation is also high for Carol director Todd Haynes' new film Wonderstruck, starring Michelle Williams and Julianne Moore, in which two stories told 50 years apart intertwine in a mysterious way, and Bong Joon-ho's monster movie Okja, made for Netflix and starring Gyllenhaal and Tilda Swinton. "You must be small and humble in front of the image that's here".

The best moment for him was the look in the eyes of the main actor when they got there - a young man who was born in a slum who told him his lifelong dream was to act and go to Cannes with "Horses of God". France remains under a state of emergency since the November 2015 Paris attacks. The actor says he loves the atmosphere at the festival, as he gets to meet people from around the world and see a wide variety of films.

When the topic was raised at the press conference Wednesday, Almodovar sided with the theater owners.

"Since Sept. 11, Cannes has. maximized security measures", festival director Thierry Fremaux said in an interview. Charlie Hebdo, the Bataclan, Nice, one year ago.

The 70th Cannes Film Festival runs from May 17 to May 28.

In the Cannes version, a new envelope was brought out and the interaction dissolved into a dance that ended with a kiss from Bellucci.

Others in the running for top honours include Happy End, another film set against the backdrop of the migrant crisis by Amour director Michael Haneke, who is seeking a record-breaking third Palme d'Or.
