Spaniard Nicolas Almagro beat compatriot Tommy Robredo 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 while in Tuesday's late match, German Alexander Zverev saw off Spain's Fernando Verdasco 7-5, 6-3.

Rafael Nadal also had an easier time following Wednesday's three-set marathon against Italian Fabio Fognini.

In doubles, Rohan Bopanna and his Uruguayan partner Pablo Cuevas were knocked out by Canada's Fabrice Martin and Daniel Nestor 6-3, 6-2 in a one-sided first round contest.

Eighth-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russian Federation defeated Qiang Wang of China 6-4, 7-5, while 14th-seeded Kristina Mladenovic of France defeated countrywoman Oceane Dodin 6-2, 6-1.

Asked about Novak Djokovic's decision to change his coaches in an attempt to end a poor run of form, he said: "I have never done that, although I have started working with Carlos Moya, who is well known to me and we are all happy working together".

Nadal claimed the first break in the second game of the second set and maintained his recent momentum to earn what was ultimately a comfortable win.

The third-seeded Halep, who also lost the 2014 final to Maria Sharapova, will play to keep her title against eighth-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russian Federation or Kristina Mladenovic of France.

Nishikori is now also a major doubt for the Rome Masters next week with 10 days to go until the start of the French Open. Cuevas won one of the points of the tournament with a no-look victor with his back to the court after a lob shot by Zverev early in the second set.

But thankfully, the original showed up just in time as he broke Almagro in the 11th game of the deciding set before serving for the match.

The former world number one has played two tournaments through wildcards since her return - losing in the semi-finals at last month's Stuttgart Open and falling to Eugenie Bouchard in the second round of the Madrid Open last week.

It marked Goffin's 27th win of the year-having made the finals in Sofia and Rotterdam plus the semis in Monte-Carlo already-and his eighth top-10 victory.

Djokovic hasn't played in the semifinals of any event since winning the title in Doha at the beginning of the year. I just kind of let the same things keep happening, making mistakes very early in a lot of the rallies.

Meanwhile, Nick Kyrgios could face Rafael Nadal in a blockbuster third-round clash on Thursday after easily seeing off Ryan Harrison 6-3, 6-3. He withdrew from Barcelona last month because of a right wrist injury.

"I've been playing at a high level for many weeks, but I know tomorrow is a day when either I'll have to play really well or I'm not going to have many chances".
