Some were surprised that Lieberman's name had risen to the top so quickly in a fast-moving process that could be completed soon.

Trump referred to Comey's testimony at a recent Capitol Hill hearing after which the Justice Department ended up having to amend part of his testimony regarding last year's probe of Hillary Clinton's email practices.

Rumors are swirling that President Trump has already found his replacement for James Comey to lead the Federal Bureau of Investigation: former Sen.

Trump is leaving Friday for his first foreign trip, to the Mideast and beyond, and aides had hoped the disarray at home would have been calmed if not resolved, allowing the White House to refocus and move ahead.

On Wednesday, Trump met with Lieberman, acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe, former Oklahoma Governor Frank Keating, and former top FBI official Richard McFeely.

The Senate must confirm whomever Trump nominates for the job.

Lieberman, who graduated from Yale Law School, joined a NY law firm after leaving the Senate.

Lieberman, who ran as vice president on Al Gore's 2000 ticket, became an independent after losing the Democratic primary in 2006.

Lieberman, who is Jewish and staunchly pro-Israel, is a former independent senator from CT, who ran on a ticket with Democrat Al Gore in 2000. John McCain (R-AZ) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC). "And all Democratic senators interviewed for this story said the former CT senator lacks the kind of experience needed for the post".

Lieberman has run for a number of political jobs, including, unsuccessfully, president of the United States.

The attempts to smear Lieberman once again only further reveal that the Democrats' concerns about Trump's connections to Russian Federation are nothing more than political plays to block the GOP legislative agenda.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein has told members of Congress he stands by a memo he wrote that preceded the president's firing of FBI Director James Comey.

Former FBI Director James Comey has agreed to testify before the Senate intelligence committee after Memorial Day.

A November 25 news release from Trump's transition team quoted Lieberman praising Trump's selection of K.T. McFarland as deputy national security adviser. He has spent part of his time as the co-chairman of a group called No Labels that seeks solutions by both political parties.

Several other candidates have withdrawn from consideration: Rep. Trey Gowdy of SC and Sen.

"I think the question is whether you want someone here with a political pedigree or you want somebody that has a law-enforcement pedigree, " Murphy said on the "Morning Joe" program on MSNBC. He also disputed the administration's characterization of the investigation into potential coordination between Russian Federation and Trump associates.
