Colombia's Fernando Gaviria continued to take the Giro d'Italia by storm when he timed his sprint to perfection to win the 13th stage yesterday, taking his tally to four victories in the race.

The Quick Step-Floors rider, back on his favourite terrain after a day in the mountains on Wednesday, outsprinted Italian Jakub Mareczko (Wilier Triestine) and Ireland's Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) after a flawless leadout from his team mates.

The 22-year-old Gaviria is the first cyclist to win three stages on his Grand Tour debut since Uwe Raab in 1990, but he brushed off claims he is the best sprinter in the peloton.

Tom Dumoulin, who rides for Team Sunweb, retained the pink jersey.

France's Pierre Rolland (Cannondale-Drapac) finished third.

Dumoulin negotiated a comfortable stage that included just two categorised ascents and still holds a lead of two minutes and 23 seconds over Quintana (Movistar) after crossing the line six seconds after Gaviria‏.

"The wind made me nervous sometimes", Dumoulin said.

Dumoulin, meanwhile, avoided mishaps as he looks ahead to Saturday's stage and beyond.

Earlier in the day, it was confirmed that Nicola Ruffoni and Stefano Pirazzi, the two Italian riders who were suspended from the race on the eve of its opening stage after testing positive during out-of-competition testing, have been sacked by their Bardiani CSF team.

"Looking ahead to tomorrow, things will be pretty steady during the day and then it will be full gas onto the last climb". Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) 4. Jasper Stuyven (Trek Segafredo) 167 3. Roberto Ferrari (ITA/UAE) s.t., 5. Rudiger Selig (GER/BOR) s.t., 7. Caleb Ewan (AUS/ORI) s.t., 9 Andre Greipel (GER/LOT) s.t., 10.

Bauke Mollema (Trek-Segafredo) is third, 2mins 38secs behind.

Behind, defending champion Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida) and Thibaut Pinot (FDJ) launched attacks which split the peloton further, dropping Thomas, and creating further time gaps in the general classification. Domenico Pozzovivo (ITA/ALM) 3:59, 9.
