Kane now sits on 75 Premier League goals, so he has some way to beating Shearer's record of 26o, but he is only 23 and barring injuries and if he continues at the same rate he could do it.

The England global scored four goals away to Leicester last night to move top of the pile heading into the final weekend of the season.

The 45-year-old Argentinian said he was not anxious Kane would leave in the close season as Spurs were in a position to keep the players they wanted to keep.

Kane's four strikes, which included a double-goal flourish in the last minutes of the one-sided contest, catapulted him past Romelu Lukaku, who for a long time has seemed the likeliest to grab the top marksman award.

Kane scored 25 goals last season to claim the Golden Boot, as Tottenham finished third, having netted 21 times in 2014-15.

Spurs will face already-relegated Hull City on Sunday, with Kane keen to finish the season with a flourish.

Cape Town - Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has highlighted the reality that the club can not compete with the biggest in the world when it comes to wages. He's one of the best strikers in the world.

As the Premier League entered the home straight last season, it was a two horse race with Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspurs duking it out for the title.

But Pochettino insists Tottenham are not in a position to sell any player who they see as important to the squad.

And Pochettino hopes the experience will stand them in good stead next term, when they have to play their home games at Wembley while White Hart Lane is rebuilt.

"I'm now sitting at the top, but we go in with the same mentality, to make sure we win first and foremost and then score as many as I can".

"It is going to be a lively game", he added.

"I always talk about the right-hand side, but who can you get to go straight in?"

'During the whole season we'e been talking about improving and learning and this type of performance shows that the team is improving and has learned a lot from last season'.

Any hopes of a Foxes fightback were extinguished soon after as Kane restored their two-goal advantage from a delicious cross from Toby Alderweireld. "It was hard because we conceded the goal but the team tried to keep going and I think we fully deserved it".
