On Thursday, Chaffetz announced he was leaving Congress, effective June 30, a move the Utah Republican said he'd make sometime during this term. He has cited time away from his family and in Thursday's statement said, "We feel my time in congress has been well spent, but it now seems the right time to turn the page".

The news, first reported by Politico, puts into motion a potentially uncertain special election process in Utah, where state lawmakers are in a stare-down with Gov. Gary Herbert over how to elect Chaffetz' replacement.

Utah Congressman Jason Chaffetz - who earlier announced he would not seek re-election in 2018 - has made a decision to end his tenure in the U.S. House of Representatives before his current term is up.

Chaffetz wields significant power as the chairman of the House Oversight Committee.

Chaffetz previously has not ruled out another run for public office at some point in the future.

"I want to still have a voice", he said of whether he would stay involved in politics. Speculation that Chaffetz might be absconding to hide a scandal-which Chaffetz flatly dismissed-soon gave way to whispers that the camera-friendly congressman might be headed to Fox News.

Mr. Chaffetz said his last day will be June 30. Pressed for the first time by White House reporters on why he fired Comey, the President rejected reports that he had leaned on the FBI Director during a White House meeting to drop a probe of former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.

This week, Chaffetz sent a letter from FBI Director Andrew McCabe seeking all FBI notes and information on Comey's communications with Trump, and he announced a hearing next week where he's invited Comey to testify.

"Chaffetz is job-hunting when he should be doing the people's business", said one anonymous Republican.

Gowdy ran the House Select Committee on the investigation into the State Department's handling of the 2012 terrorist attack in Benghazi.

Comey was sacked last week as the FBI investigates whether Trump's presidential campaign associates had colluded with Russian Federation to influence the outcome in his behalf.

"I think the Clinton email investigation is still not complete, and it is such importance to the nation", he said.

He said he hoped other members of his committee would keep the investigation going.

None of the Republicans running for office should expect an endorsement from Chaffetz until a nominee has been selected, he said.

Who is likely to takeover that post and what will that do to the investigation?

As a college football kicker at Mormon-owned Brigham Young University in Utah, Chaffetz stumped for Dukakis during his 1988 presidential campaign.
