North Korea repeatedly flaunts that it intends to develop a missile capable of striking the USA mainland. The Musudan is one of the most advanced missiles that Pyongyang has tested successfully. Bill Clinton pursued engagement, which lasted until North Korea was caught cheating on its commitments to us.

On Monday, North Korea's regime issued a statement claiming that its new rocket could deliver a "large heavy nuclear warhead" all the way to the USA mainland.

North Korea has made no secret of the fact that it is working to develop a nuclear-tipped missile capable of striking the USA mainland and has ignored calls to rein in its nuclear and missile programmes, even from China, its lone major ally.

Kong arrived in Washington earlier in the day on a mission to deliver Moon's message to Trump and lay the foundations for the first summit between the two leaders.

In Washington, A U.S. defense official told AFP the missile fired on Sunday appeared to be a liquid-fueled KN-17, marking what appeared to be the most successful launch of such a device.

In a separate meeting with Lee on Friday, China's top diplomat Yang Jiechi said China "hopes that South Korea can respect China's major concerns (and) appropriately resolve the THAAD issue", Xinhua reported.

Asked about Beijing and Moscow's support for the six previous rounds of United Nations sanctions, Kim said both countries are "close neighbors" who "understand our nuclear projection occurred through the USA continued nuclear threat and its hostile policy" toward North Korea.

Moon and President Xi Jinping spoke on the phone last week and both agreed that denuclearising North Korea was a "common goal" between them.

Xi's remarks came in a meeting with South Korean special envoy Lee Hae-chan, who was dispatched to Beijing by new President Moon Jae-in on a mission to reopen contacts and seek a way out of the current impasse that has hit South Korean businesses hard.

Moon sent envoys to the United States, China, Japan and the European Union this week in what the government calls "pre-emptive diplomacy".

"The reality is that there is a high possibility of a military conflict at the NLL [Northern Limit Line] and military demarcation line", Reuters cited Moon as saying.

On Thursday, Hong, a former newspaper president who served as South Korea's ambassador to the USA in 2005, visited Congress for a series of meetings with senators and congressmen who have played key roles in enhancing relations between the two countries.

When asked what the USA would do if it was confirmed that North Korea had been behind the major ransomware attack plaguing computer systems across the globe, Haley said: "Sadly, it wouldn't be a surprise".

This data underlines the progress made by Pyongyang in its efforts to develop an intercontinental nuclear missile in the future that can reach the United States. Hecker estimates that Pyongyang has enough plutonium and highly enriched uranium to produce 20 to 25 nuclear weapons and said there is "no conceivable way" the US could destroy them all with a preemptive strike.
