National Safe Boating Week kicks off Saturday

  • National Safe Boating Week is May 20 - 26

While it is MI law that anyone under the age of 6 must wear a life jacket on the open deck of any vessel, all boaters are encouraged to wear one. "You have a responsibility to yourself, your passengers and fellow boaters to be as safe as possible".

The annual National Safe Boating Week safety campaign kicks off Saturday, and Coast Guard units and Auxiliary flotillas all across the Great Lakes are planning to host events and highlight the importance of boating safety throughout the week leading up to Memorial Day weekend.

U.S. Coast Guard statistics show that drowning was the reported cause of death in approximately 75% of recreational boating fatalities in 2015, and that approximately 85 percent of those who drowned were not wearing life jackets. Many state and federal laws say kids must wear a life jacket at all times but adults have the option of simply having one onboard to put on if emergency strikes. Always carry a first-aid kit, nautical charts, anchor, and marine radio or cellphone. Let them know when to expect you back. This is especially true when operating in crowded waterways, at night and when visibility is restricted. Make sure your phone is fully charged but be aware that there often are coverage gaps on the water.

Boat Ed, the vendor who provides the online version of Arkansas's Boating Education Course, will be offering a special discount to anyone who completes the program from May 20-26 to help promote National Safe Boating Week.

Wailoa Boat Ramp, Hilo - Saturday, May 20, and Sunday May 21, from 8 a.m.to 3 p.m. - Public information booth, vessel safety checks, and small commercial fishing vessel exams.
