On the other hand, computers running on Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012, Windows 10, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2016 had received the security update back in March 2017.

Rudd was speaking after chairing a meeting in Whitehall, London, of the government's main emergency committee, known as Cobra.

He added: "Where we need to cancel planned appointments, we will be contacting patients directly to make them aware and we apologise for any inconvenience caused".

In one instance, the cyber attack prevented people from receiving hospital care.

NHS organisations across the country are on alert for a possible recurrence of Friday's cyberattack as staff return to work.

There is a more "complex emerging picture" of the cyber-attack that hit Britain's National Health Service - and other parts of the world - over the weekend.

"The numbers are going up; I am anxious about how the numbers will continue to grow when people go to work and turn (on) their machines on Monday morning".

Now, a second wave of what European officials label as the "biggest ransomware attack ever" is highly likely to be more devastating.

The following screen pops up when people have been hacked by the "Wannacry" virus.

The so-called WannaCry ransomware locks access to user files and in an on-screen message demands payment of $300 (275 euros) in the virtual currency Bitcoin in order to decrypt the files.

A COMMUNITY health service is operating normally after concerns it had been impacted by a cyber attack which has affected the NHS.

The attacks affected 150 countries and infected at least 200,000 computers worldwide, despite global cyber security firms warning last month that they were expected. The exploit is called EternalBlue and the American National Security Agency (NSA) has been aware of it for some time.

There are a total of 2.2 lakh ATMs in India, of which many old ones run on Windows XP. So far, over 200,000 computers have been infected. "Computers that had not been updated with the Microsoft patch were vulnerable to attack".

"I like a physical external backup, so an external hard drive that you connect and then can disconnect from the computer system and then don't keep it hooked up to the computer system because then that could also be affected", said Siewert. A 22-year old security researcher in the United Kingdom discovered a "kill-switch" to initially stop the spread of the attack.
