Qualcomm shows off wireless charging for electric vehicles

  • Dynamic EV charger that works at 60mph could end range anxiety

DEVC, which was designed and built based on the Qualcomm Halo wireless electric vehicle charging technology, can provide an electric vehicle (EV) a 20-kilowatt charge at highway speeds through tracks embedded with wireless charging hardware. The charging should happen when you are driving, and Qualcomm just showed off a technology called dynamic electric vehicle charging (DEVC) to showcase the ability to do that.

The initial test had a 100-meter track set by VEDECOM and while Qualcomm and VEDECOM worked together in integrating the source part of the track, VEDECOM and Renault worked together in integrating the receiving part onto two vehicles that were used for the test. The system is also capable of simultaneous charging in which two vehicles using the same track can charge dynamically at the same time. Even better, the track can charge more than one vehicle traveling on it, without a degradation in output.

Developed in conjunction with telecommunications equipment company Qualcomm and urban mobility research organisation Vedecom the concept takes the principles behind static wireless charging and applies them to moving vehicles.

Aside from simply charging the vehicle, the system is also planned to offer functions to identify and authorise cars entering the charging track, as well as detecting the alignment and speed of the charging auto.

Despite the fact that electric vehicle charging rates have been improving rapidly and should soon solve the charging issue, there are still a few companies working on dynamic charging technology (DEVC) as a potential solution for charging times. It has cost €9 million ($9.9 million) and is partially funded by the European Union.

Steve Pazol, vice president and general manager, Wireless Charging, Qualcomm Incorporated, said, "We are inventors". The primary goal, however, is to organize feasibility analysis of wireless DEVC as a means of EV range extension.

Being able to recharge your electric auto while you're driving it on public roads is the Holy Grail of EV technology, and now Qualcomm Technologies says it has seen the light. "I am immensely proud of what we have achieved".

Qualcomm released a video showing how the wireless charging technology works.
