Sigurdsson should remember Tottenham spell before leaving Swansea - Clement

20 May, 2017, 11:13 | Author: Alberta Rodriguez
  • Swansea assist-king Gylfi Sigurdsson won't force exit amid Newcastle and Everton links

"I think he has a unique situation", said Clement.

"He can not have another situation like he had at Tottenham, where he potentially goes somewhere and is in and out of the side, and does not gather any momentum".

"He is going to have that in his mind - if he is going to make the next step it has to be a positive one".

Sigurdsson has been one of the Premier League's star performers this season with nine assists and 13 goals in a struggling Swansea team - a combined total only matched by Tottenham's Christian Eriksen.

The Iceland midfielder's excellent form this season has seen him linked with clubs including Everton, but Sigurdsson says he is happy at Swansea.

Well, while the quotes from the player were defiant, Everton boss Ronald Koeman will know that he can offer Sigurdsson European football and a regular spot in his side next season - similarly to West Ham and Newcastle - and it is doubtful that this is the last we will hear about the Iceland worldwide this summer.

According to recent reports, the likes of Everton and West Ham want to sign him this summer.

On his future and meeting the club's owners next week: "The most important thing is going to China on Monday and having a meeting with the Chinese and Mr Lai and finding out exactly what they've got and their views going forward".

Sigurdsson made the announcement at the club's annual awards ceremony, where it came as no surprise to see him claim both the supporters and players' player of the year awards, showing just how much he means to those inside and out of the club.

Clement sanctioned a two-night break for the players in the party capital of the Mediterranean after Swansea secured their Premier League status last weekend. A player of Sigurdsson's vast quality should be fighting near the top of the table rather than the bottom, which he presumably would have more chance of doing at Everton, and Clement knows the former Tottenham star has a decision to make.

"The season is not over yet and we want a good performance at home - there's lots of motivation going into the last game".

"A lot of players have to make that decision in their careers".

"He has something special with Iceland, too, where he is a key man".

West Brom have had a hard season and I think Swansea will end on a massive high.
