US President Trump launches NAFTA renegotiation

President Donald Trump has officially alerted Congress that he will begin NAFTA renegotiation talks.

On Thursday, US trade representative Robert Lighthizer formally notified congressional leaders by letter that the president intends to start talks "as soon as practicable", initiating a 90-day period in which congress and the administration will agree the objectives of the negotiations.

This means negotiations can begin at the earliest in August.

Trump's newly confirmed trade representative, Robert Lighthizer, told reporters on a conference call that NAFTA has been successful for USA agriculture, investment services and the energy sector, but not for manufacturing.

"Modest tweaks will not stop NAFTA's ongoing damage, much less deliver on (President Donald) Trump's promises for a d".

American Farm Bureau Federation President Zippy Duvall said in a statement: "The American Farm Bureau looks forward to working with the administration, Congress, other agricultural groups, and officials in Canada and Mexico to protect these important markets while also addressing issues that have limited the trade potential of US farmers and ranchers".

"There is no question that NAFTA has been tremendously successful for American workers, farmers, and businesses", Kevin Brady, a Republican congressman from Texas, said in a statement.

Canada is ready to work with the United States and Mexico to bring the 23-year-old North American Free Trade Agreement up to 21 century standards, Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland said Thursday. "The whole energy sector has changed and the way we do business has too so I'm not averse to any of that", Pacheco said. "But we're going to give renegotiation a good, strong shot". In April, Trump said he would not pull out of NAFTA for the time being, but could still withdraw if he concludes a renegotiated pact is not "a fair deal for all". Lighthizer told reporters that he hopes negotiations will be completed by the end of 2017, according to Reuters.

The president, whose campaign trail vows to tear up Nafta appealed to his base of disaffected working-class voters aggrieved by globalization, is under mounting pressure to follow through on his pledge.

NAFTA forced the abandonment of the countryside by the Mexican government, effectively expelling millions of peasants who emigrated to the United States and opening the doors to the growth of the narcotics trade - and hence to the control of vast rural territories by organized crime. "With that said, NAFTA can be improved to incentivise more textile and apparel jobs and production in the United States, Canada, and Mexico", Tantillo added. "Since NAFTA was implemented, US agricultural exports to Canada and Mexico have tripled and quintupled, respectively".

In the course the of more than 20 years since its signing, NAFTA has negatively impacted some parts of the country but it has also benefited others.

"I don't care if its a renovation of NAFTA, or a brand new NAFTA, but we do have to make it fair", Trump said when he signed an executive order on the trade agreement on January 23.

Good idea! And it so happens that a convenient template for most of those changes already exists in the abandoned Trans-Pacific Partnership, which the us stupidly failed to close past year. The agreement eliminated numerous tariffs on trade between the US, Canada and Mexico.
