In a Friday morning tweet, President Donald Trump confirmed a recent Washington Post report that he is now under investigation, misdescribed what that investigation is about, blasted the investigation as a "witch hunt", and appeared to attack his own deputy attorney general.

On Twitter Friday, the president appeared to confirm he is under investigation for his firing of former FBI Director James Comey.

Because the investigation now includes questions about whether or not President Donald Trump may have obstructed justice in conversations with former FBI Director James Comey who he later fired, Rosenstein's involvement has come under scrutiny.

Mark Corallo, spokesman for Trump's personal lawyer, Marc Kasowitz, said earlier this week that, "The FBI leak of information regarding the president is outrageous, inexcusable, and illegal".

Trump on Thursday fired of a series of tweets describing the Russian Federation investigation as a "witch hunt" and he inquired to as to why Hillary Clinton's alleged dealings with Russian Federation were not being investigated.

He has tweeted four times Friday morning, also lashing out at the news media and insisting that economy is doing well "despite the phony Witch Hunt" he spent some of Thursday decrying on Twitter as well. Rosenstein can fire Mueller, but that doesn't make him the one investigating Trump.

Additionally, he took the opportunity to highlight some perceived presidential wins, while continuing to decry the "phony Witch Hunt".

Rosenstein wrote a memo last month noting concerns about Comey's handling of the Hillary Clinton email investigation that the White House initially used to justify the removal of the FBI director. "My decision", Trump told Holt, a day after the White House had said the president fired Comey based on a recommendation from Rosenstein. It was not clear whether Trump's tweet was referring to Rosenstein or Mueller, but most news organizations identified the former as Trump's target.

Trump and his allies have suggested Mueller's independence may be tainted because of his friendship with Comey - who admitted to Congress that he made disclosures with the intention of getting Rosenstein to appoint a special counsel - as well as his hiring of Democrats to assist in the investigation.

Hours later, a source close to Mr Trump's outside legal team said the President did not intend his tweet to be confirmation of the investigation but rather was reacting to a Washington Post story.

In early May, on the day Comey was sacked, Rosenstein wrote a scathing memo about the way Comey conducted himself during the Hillary Clinton email investigation. "The Department of Justice has a long-standing policy to neither confirm or deny such allegations".

"Why is that Hillary Clintons family and Dems dealings with Russian Federation are not looked at, but my non-dealings are?" he asked at one point.

The shift toward probing Trump began days after Trump forced former Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James Comey to quit last month.
