Atari Gets Back In The Console Game With Ataribox

  • Atari CEO confirms the company is working on a new game console

However, the comment by Chesnais that the console will be based on PC technology has led some to suggest the company's ambitions lie a little closer to the mainstream.

Back when the games console market was still in its infancy, Atari was a big name on the hardware side of things. Many didn't really believe what they had seen and were not ready to believe that a new Atari console could be in development.

Chesnais declined to describe a lot of details about the console.

At the moment it is unclear whether the console will be a new machine or a throwback console, similar to the Nintendo's NES Classic Edition.

According to VentureBeat, the Ataribox will run on PC technology and a final design is still being worked on.

Atari is back in the hardware business. Will it offer the chance to developers to come up with original games?

Given that Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo are now truly cemented as giants of the video games console industry, it looks unlikely that Atari plans to compete with them.

Atari may be resurrecting the classic home console that ushered in a golden age of gaming.

Maybe Atari will blow some minds.

Atari posted the brief video above on June 8, teasing a device called the Ataribox.

If this is Atari's goal, it might be a suicidal mission. Some have predicted that the "Ataribox" will be just another failure for the company.

We've reached out to Atari for further details, and we'll update this article with any information we receive.
