Donald Trump's Real Danger Is Political, Not Legal

Appearing on a series of morning news programs, attorney Jay Sekulow, chief counsel of the American Center for Law and Justice, said, "Let me be clear here, the president is not and has not been under investigation for obstruction".

Trump ally Newt Gingrich said Sunday that he began to grow skeptical of Mueller after fired Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey testified that he had leaked details about his conversations with the president in order to prompt the appointment of a special counsel.

If true, the claims would represent a major turning point in the investigation, which until now has focused on the possibility of Russian interference with the election; according to those officials, the direction of the investigation changed after the firing of former FBI Director James Comey.

Trump would later fire Comey, saying at first that he had done so on the recommendation of Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein, but later admitted that he had chose to fire Comey prior to hearing from the Justice Department and that he had done so because of his frustration about the Russian Federation investigation.

Barak Cohen, a former Justice Department lawyer and now a defence attorney specializing in white-collar crime and investigations, said there was no requirement that the special counsel notify Trump he was under investigation, so the lack of such notice meant nothing.

The Post on Wednesday reported Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election now includes looking into whether Trump attempted to obstruct justice.

The legal and political threats hanging over the Trump presidency have hampered efforts by the White House to fill the top ranks of government. "The president is not and has not been under investigation for obstruction".

"I can say categorically that the collusion or cooperation aspect of the investigation is not over", the Maine senator told "Meet the Press", adding that the probe could be done by the end of 2017. "Witch Hunt." It was the first time Trump had publicly acknowledged that he's under investigation.

Gingrich said he had lost confidence in Mueller because he is a friend of Comey, and said too many members of Mueller's investigative team have ties to Democrats.

"I don't have any reason to doubt the credibility of Bob Mueller to conduct this [investigation]", Rubio said. He went so far as to file a ridiculous ethics complaint against then-FBI Director James Comey over Comey's handling of the Clinton email investigation.

He spoke on ABC's "This Week".

In a two-part tweet posted before 7 a.m. Sunday, Trump wrote: "The MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN agenda is doing very well despite the distraction of the Witch Hunt".

They said Sekulow's denials were not so much a legal argument as an effort to fix the political damage from the apparent admission by Trump.

Trump has denied making these comments, which Comey said he documented in contemporaneous memos.

Sekulow said Trump would address the issue of the tapes - whose very existence is unclear - in the "week ahead". Angus King of ME, an independent who caucuses with the Democrats.

The Senate intelligence committee is in the early stages of its probe and is looking at whether anyone involved in the campaign shared information with the Russians, said Senator Angus King of ME, an independent who caucuses with Democrats.

Sekulow said Trump "is not and has not been under investigation".

Yet Trump's tweets in recent days condemning the actions of his own Justice Department have reached an intense level, revealing the president's increasing agitation about the probe and the attention it has drawn.
