After he and three others were shot at the Republican team's morning practice session for the annual Congressional baseball game, Rep. Steve Scalise was raced to the hospital by first responders.

One source told CBS News the note is not considered an "assassination list", but it is clear Hodgkinson had a group of people he was focused on recently.

The handwritten list reportedly included the names of Alabama Rep. Mo Brooks, South Carolina Rep. Jeff Duncan and Arizona Rep. Trent Franks, who were all at the baseball practice, according to NBC News and CNN.

Mr Scalise's surgeon said he can hope to make an "excellent recovery", despite being seriously ill when he arrived at hospital after the shooting in Virginia last week.

For now, Scalise remains in critical condition in the hospital's intensive care unit. Doctors said Friday the bullet entered at his hip and traveled across his body, causing severe damage to internal organs. The rifle blast left possibly hundreds of bullet fragments that the doctor said will not likely be removed.

"After he leaves the hospital, he will require a period of healing and of rehabilitation".

Law enforcement officials identified the shooter as 66-year-old James Hodgkinson of Belleville, Illinois, who later died from injuries sustained during a shootout with police on the scene.

"I feel a lot more optimistic than I did two or three days ago". "I think that his risk of death right now is substantially lower than when he came in. he was as critical as you can be when he came in".

Trump added that Scalise is "having a hard time, far worse than anybody thought" following the shooting Wednesday.

Two Capitol police officers, David Bailey and Crystal Griner, as well as House Republican aide Zack Barth were injured, but have been released from hospital.

Mika also remained hospitalized Saturday after undergoing an additional surgery.
