The number of people dead and missing presumed dead after the Grenfell Tower fire disaster has risen to 79, police have said.

Members of the emergency services work inside burnt out remains of the Grenfell apartment tower in North Kensington, London, Britain, June 18, 2017.

The fire ripped through the 24-story tower early Wednesday.

The new exterior cladding used in a renovation on London's Grenfell Tower may have been banned under United Kingdom building regulations, two British ministers said Sunday as police continued their criminal investigation into the inferno that killed at least 58 people.

"His family is being supported by liaison officers from the Metropolitan Police", Cundy said. They previously estimated the figure to be 30.

Entire families remain unaccounted for, and authorities say the fire was so devastating their search operation may take weeks and the true death toll may never be known.

Corbyn said on Sunday that the government has the power to take over empty apartments and offer them to the hundreds of Grenfell Tower residents left homeless by Wednesday's fire.

"I would like to reassure everybody that we will be looking at all criminal offenses that may have been committed by any individual or any organization", said Cundy.

Cundy said five people who had been reported as missing had now been found and were safe and well.

He also formally identified the first person known to have died as 23-year-old Mohammad al-Hajjali, a Syrian refugee.

A day after the deadly incident, Housing Minister Alok Sharma told MPs the government "will guarantee that every single family from Grenfell Tower will be re-housed in the local area".

Local councils will also carry out safety checks on buildings similar to the Grenfell Tower, the prime minister said.

"It will go to establish the answers of what happened in the fire and how it spread; it will look at the building itself; it will look at the refurbishment as well". "We need to find out precisely what cladding was used and how it was attached". A spokesman for Britain's Home Office said Saturday it was helping his family travel to the country from Syria, but did not provide further details. "My understanding is the cladding in question, this flammable cladding which is banned in Europe and the USA, is also banned here", Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond said in a recent interview with BBC's The Andrew Marr Show.

British health authorities will also provide long-term bereavement counselling for those who lost loved ones in the tragedy.
