Congressman Steve Scalise remains in critical condition following surgery to fix injuries sustained after he was shot at a congressional baseball practice Wednesday, hospital officials announced in a statement on Thursday evening.

Interest in the charity baseball game has skyrocketed in the aftermath of the shooting, as staffers and lawmakers look to rally around Scalise and the three others who were shot: a congressional staffer, a lobbyist and a Capitol Police special agent.

The senior Republican is at the Medstar Washington Hospital Centre with a rifle wound in his left hip that shattered bones, tore organs and caused severe bleeding.

Scalise had been at "imminent risk of death" when he was first brought into the hospital on Wednesday, and he received many units of transfused blood, Sava said.

Despite his optimism, Sava said Scalise's condition remained critical: "He will require additional operations to manage abdominal injuries and other bone injuries".

Alexandria shooting victim and MI native Matt Mika is showing "positive results" after undergoing additional surgery over the weekend, and is expected to make a full recovery, his family said.

U.S. Capitol Police Officer Crystal Griner, who was shot in the ankle, is reported to be in good condition.

President Donald Trump thanked the members of Congress and others for supporting the Congressional Baseball Game with a recorded statement played at Nationals Park Thursday night.

The shooter, James T. Hodgkinson, was killed by police Wednesday after firing dozens of bullets during the congressional practice session.

Scalise is said to be somewhat responding to medical staff and family, according to the doctors.

Medstar Washington Hospital Centre released the update on behalf of the Scalise family.

For the game, which began in 1909, members of the Senate and House of Representatives donned uniforms representing teams from their constituencies for the game and many topped them with hats from Louisiana State University, Mr Scalise's alma mater, as a tribute.

Trump added that Scalise is "having a hard time, far worse than anybody thought" following the shooting Wednesday. Infection remains a considerable risk in the days and weeks during Scalise's extended hospital stay, Sava said. He remains in critical condition. They said he was able to communicate through notes and signed the game ball from Friday's congressional baseball game.

From the stands, Vince Wetzel, a resident of Sacramento, California, who is visiting Washington and chose to take in the game, said, "It's just a good call to put aside political differences and just play some baseball". "Our orthopedic trauma surgeons are very good and they can work miracles", he said.
