England reaches Champions Trophy Semis

20 June, 2017, 12:24 | Author: Alberta Rodriguez

Jos Buttler's quickfire unbeaten 61 helped take England to a total of 310 all out in their Champions Trophy match against New Zealand in Cardiff on Tuesday.

England became the first team in the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 to qualify for the semifinals with a convincing 87 run win over New Zealand. "But when you post over 300, you're always in with a shout", said skipper Eoin Morgan after the end of the match. England will look to put one foot in the semi-finals with a second successive win while New Zealand will aim for two full points after rain denied them a crack at Australia.

Ball had set the tempo by clean bowling Luke Ronchi in the first over, while Mark Wood's clever cross-seam delivery saw off New Zealand captain Kane Williamson when on 87 and with the Black Caps looking increasingly threatening.

"Any game between England and Australia is a huge game and has that edge but it would be nice (to send them home)", Buttler said.

England play their last group match against Australia, which would be a do-or-die match for the Steve Smith-led side, on June 10.

The New Zealand side meet Bangladesh in Cardiff on Friday night (NZ time) in their final pool match of the one-day cricket worldwide competition, with England and Australia facing off in the pool's other fixture.

Wood and Ball, who also removed Ross Taylor for 39, went for less than four runs an over as Rashid's leg-spin was also economical and accounted for Neil Broom and Mitchell Santner. We never take any position that we've ever been in, for granted.

New Zealand need to beat Bangladesh and see their rivals to lose their final match against England to have a chance of qualifying for the next round. Adam Milne and Corey Anderson bagged three wickets each for the visitors.

"It was backing up consistency in selection and trying to get guys together as a group that we've showed trust in over the last couple of years", he said.

One of Buttler's most outrageous strokes came in the 46th over.

New Zealand managed just 223 in reply.

Virat Kohli urged India to produce a repeat of their Pakistan demolition when they face Sri Lanka in Group B today.

"If a couple of guys start scoring in the next game, we are a very unsafe side", Tamim said.
