Fleetwood pictures changed life with Open win

  • Fleetwood focused as he bids for first major

This is his third appearance at the US Open, and the first time he has made the cut.

England's Paul Casey and Tommy Fleetwood shared the lead on seven under par alongside American duo Brooks Koepka and Brian Harman, the first four-way tie after 36 holes since 1974.

McIlroy won the US Open with a record 16-under-par total in 2011 and claimed his second major title in the US PGA the following year.

But that's not all that makes the possibilities so limitless Saturday.

Harman might be the surprise leader after three rounds at the U.S. Open, but there was nothing ordinary about his game.

ERIN, Wis. (AP) - Five players have reached 10-under par or better so far this week at the U.S. Open - one fewer than the number who had done it over the first 116 years of what had been known as the toughest test in golf.

Paula Dougherty of Murrieta, Calif., hugs her son Kevin after he finished the second round of the USA open golf tournament Friday, June 16, 2017, at Erin Hills in Erin, Wis. Dougherty finished the day shooting at 1 under par, making the cut.

Keep in mind, Thomas was also battling it out on one of the most insane leaderboards you'll ever see. Mickelson has won every major but the U.S. Open.

"At 12 under par, I'd have a 10-shot lead at most (US) Opens".

Harman had one bogey Saturday, at the par-4 third hole, to go with six birdies.

On that occasion Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Hale Irwin and Ray Floyd shared the halfway lead, with Irwin going on to win the "Massacre at Winged Foot" on seven over par. Brian Harman, who had the lead coming into the day, made a long birdie putt on No. 3 to join Koepka on top.

And despite starting his second round with bogeys on his first two holes, the South African bounced back to record a superb 66 which he matched in the third round.

However, the 26-year-old from Southport then bogeyed the sixth after hitting a poor chip across the green and dropped another shot on the eighth after firing his approach over the green. "I've pictured winning the U.S. Open a lot of times before".

But it was his tie for fourth in the 2014 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 that enabled him to get a PGA Tour card.

He is in strong form and was poised to win two FedEx Cup playoff events previous year, losing to great finishes to Dustin Johnson (him again) and Rory McIlroy. Thomas was awesome, and Erin Hills will host more majors down the road.

Jordan Spieth hit probably one of the best tee shots he has made all weekend at the U.S. Open.

Whoever emerged victorious would definitely have earned it given the conditions which were reminiscent of the final round of the 1992 US Open at Pebble Beach.

"I'm looking forward to my shot at it, I know it's not going to be an easy day, for sure", Fowler said.

On Saturday, Fowler exploited the benign conditions at Erin Hills to haul himself back into the frame. There no longer is a 10-shot rule that would allow anyone within 10 shots of the lead to make the cut.
