  • Pliskova into first French Open semifinal

Ostapenko, an unseeded player, took down No. 30 Timea Bacsinszky in her semifinal matchup, winning, 7-6 (4), 3-6, 6-3.

Jelena Ostapenko became the first Latvian Grand Slam finalist after blasting past Timea Bacsinszky 7-6 (7/4), 3-6, 6-3 in the French Open semi-finals on Thursday.

"I didn't think I would be in the final but every match I've played better", Ostapenko said. I made too many mistakes in the first set, but was later able to put my game together and become more confident about myself to pull out the win, " she said.

She will play either the second seed Karolina Pliskova or the third seed Simona Halep in the final on Saturday. But Halep responded with a break of her own while Pliskova had a chance to tie the match while serving, and then finished out the match by holding serve in the final game.

"She played unbelievable tennis in the first set until the end of the second set", Halep told reporters.

Ostapenko sealed the win on her second match point with a forehand victor to break Bacsinszky's serve for the fourth time in the set.

"I think today I showed that I'm stronger mentally", Halep was quoted as saying on the French Open's official Web site. Her leaded forehand is her biggest weapon but she hits victor from all over the court, all the time.

But the Romanian survived, saving a match point in the process, and will perhaps think her name is on the trophy.

Pliskova is fairly new to playing this deep in Grand Slams.

Branstine, 16, from Irvine, Calif., is playing her first Grand Slam tournament as a representative of Canada after making the decision in March.

SIMONA Halep has propelled Darren Cahill to the cusp of another extraordinary coaching milestone by overcoming world No 3 Karolina Pliskova to reach the French Open final.

Ostapenko fell in the first round on her main draw debut in Paris previous year but is one win away from becoming the first player since Gustavo Kuerten in 1997 to win their maiden tour-level title at a Slam.

At age 20, Jelena Ostapenko is the youngest player to reach the French Open final since 19-year-old Ana Ivanovic 10 years ago.

Kuerten won that year's French Open - the first of three Roland Garros titles for the Brazilian - on the same day Ostapenko was born.

"In some moments", Ostapenko said, "I felt a little bit tight". Ostapenko, meanwhile, is going to be focused on her first Grand Slam event. Bacsinszky knew more than most what to expect, having played doubles with her a couple of times on Tour.

Sir Andy Murray of Great Britain, the world number one, will meet Switzerland's Stan Wawrinka in a repeat of last year's semi-final in the other match.
