Hosts Russia see off New Zealand in Confederations Cup opener

New Zealand is now without a win in four trips to the Confederations Cup, and next plays Mexico on Wednesday in Sochi.

It was the former who made the difference.

Hosts Russia have beaten New Zealand 2-0 in St. Petersburg to get their Federation Internationale de Football Association 2017 Confederations Cup campaign off to a winning start.

Rating chances came early for Russian Federation, having fun with self-confidence as well as unanticipated panache, a powerful header by protector Viktor Vasin jumping off the inside of the article prior to being cleared by New Zealand's Michael McGlinchey.

The score was opened in the 31st minute when midfielder Denis Glushakov shoved the ball into the lower left corner of the visitors' net, reports Tass news agency.

New Zealand are competing at the FIFA Confederations Cup for the fourth time after winning the OFC Nations Cup last June in Papua New Guinea. "They are a top quality side and we were under pressure from the start".

It was the ideal start for the Russians in a game played at the new Krestovsky Stadium, where President Vladimir Putin and Federation Internationale de Football Association chief Gianni Infantino both gave speeches before kick-off.

In the 69th minute, Russian Federation scored again when Smolov started a move on the halfway line, passed the ball wide to the right to Alexander Samedov and Smolov sprinted in to the penalty area to score from five yards.

Wood's New Zealand came close to scoring with two back-to-back chances with 10 minutes to go but Russian Federation held on, leaving the New Zealand skipper wishing for more.

"I liked New Zealand's team but luckily we managed to cancel out their strengths and displayed ours, and that was the key to our win tonight", Cherchesov said.

"We played them [Mexico] nine months ago and only lost 2-1 while having loads of chances". In the USA, for example, Fox Sports is set to show the tournament for the first time as it continues its relationship with major global competitions.

Meanwhile, with the support of a task force created by the local organising committee and headed by former Russian Federation worldwide Alexei Smertin, Fifa has instituted a new three-step anti-racism strategy during games at the Confederations Cup. On their fourth appearance at the tournament, and after 10 matches, their best result is a draw.
