India captain Virat Kohli: Pakistan completely outplayed us in Champions Trophy final

But a brilliant century by Fakhar Zaman laid the foundations for an imposing total of 338 for four and Mohammad Amir came up with a devastating opening spell to rip out the cream of India's batting, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan.

India were the lopsided favorites to win a record third Trophy in a record fourth final, but Pakistan blew away all predictions and expectations with a win of stunning ease.

Victorious Pakistan players dominate the team with their captain Sarfraz Ahmed named captain of the side.

The former captains were of the view that success in the Champions Trophy widely speaks about the rise of cricket in Pakistan despite the fact that foreign teams are not visiting the country for nearly one decade.

Fast bowlers Junaid Khan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Hassan shared 28 wickets between them in the tournament, while wrist-spinner Adil Rashid finished with seven wickets with an economy rate of 4.73. "Credit to everyone for standing up and showing that resilience and reaching the final but today we were outplayed in all departments".

India will feel aggrieved as Fakhar, on three, was caught by wicketkeeper Mahehdra Singh Dhoni off a Jasprit Bumrah no-ball and the 27-year-old left-hander took full advantage to reach his first global century.

"Pakistan break jinx, trounce India in dream final", the Dawn proclaimed in its lead story.

The victory, and its relative ease over an India team that not only had got the better of Pakistan in one-day matches for the past decade, winning 12 and losing only eight - and winning four of the last five since 2013 - stunned cricket fans and experts, especially coming from a Pakistan team that has played only one worldwide series in its home country since a 2009 terrorist attack forced them to adopt the United Arab Emirates as their home turf.

Amir, once vilified for his role in the 2010 Pakistan spot-fixing scandal which led to him serving a prison term in the United Kingdom, was at his brilliant best when he produced a devastating opening spell.

"To be appointed as captain of the Team of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017, which includes some of the finest and most attractive cricketers of this generation, is the ideal icing on the cake", Sarfraz told the ICC website.

Their hopes now rested largely on the shoulders of Shikhar Dhawan who had been in fine form in the tournament but he made only 21 before nicking the inspired Amir to wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed.

Amir struck just three balls into India's reply when, after bowling two outswingers to Sharma, he had him lbw with an inswinger.

According to Dhoni's statement a year ago, India were bound to lose to Pakistan on one day.

But he only looked to be delaying the inevitable and a mix-up with Ravindra Jadeja saw him run out for 76. Kohli also said he backed his boys to chase in the title clash.

"Congratulations to Pakistan. The way they turned things around, it was wonderful", Kohli said.
