The UK Government has warned that direct rule from London could be reimposed if the local parties fail to reach an agreement before the June 29 deadline.

Mr Coveney pledged to "spare no effort" to help get the Stormont power-sharing Executive back up and running.

"The talks are going on but one thing I am absolutely certain of is that the DUP do not want to see another election and Jeremy Corbyn in Downing Street", he said.

Mr Varadkar said he was "very reassured" by her commitment to make public the terms of any deal. We are working away at them and we will continue to work away at them. "I think it is all very doable".

Gerry Adams led a delegation to Government Buildings including Ms O'Neill, Sinn Fein deputy leader Mary Lou McDonald and newly-elected Fermanagh South Tyrone MP Michelle Gildernew.

For 40 years the British government has stayed out of sectarian politics.

British Prime Minister Theresa May's Conservative Party is confident of securing a "sensible" deal with the small Northern Irish Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), Transport Secretary Chris Grayling said on Tuesday.

The spokeswoman also said the government, which has been accused of a slow and insensitive response to the Grenfell Tower fire, had now contacted all local authorities in England asking them to identify any safety concerns in light of the tragedy.

Ms Foster dismissed suggestions her deal with the Tories threatened the peace process.

Mrs May said: "I am personally committed to ensuring a practical solution that recognises the unique economic, social, cultural and political context of the land border with Ireland, which so many people pass through every day, and it remains our priority to work closely with the Irish Government to ensure as frictionless and seamless a border as possible".

"What would happen then?"

"Not only do a huge majority of people in Northern Ireland want to see abortion made available to women and girls in the tragic circumstances of sexual crime or fatal foetal diagnosis, but they also want to see abortion decriminalised and dealt with through healthcare policy". She has really hacked off the parliamentary party for obvious reasons.

The Sunday Times said ministers within May's cabinet had "let it be known" they would oust the prime minister if they thought she could not pass the government's legislative program in a vote expected on June 28. That is why Sinn Féin stood the DUP leader down from her position last January.
