Jared Kushner speaks in public. And Washington takes notice

20 June, 2017, 12:33 | Author: Mae Harvey

Jared Kushner, President Trump's senior adviser and son-in-law, will visit the Middle East later for meetings in Jerusalem and the West Bank aimed at trying to jump-start peace talks.

That, at least, is how former USA ambassador Dan Shapiro looks at the Trump administration's continuing diplomatic push in the region, a push that will be reinforced on Wednesday with the arrival of Trump's son-in-law, advisor and all around trouble shooter, Jared Kushner.

CBS News reports he kicked off the White House's "Technology Week" to brainstorm how the government can become more efficient.

On Wednesday, Kushner will travel to the Middle East, where he will meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas about their priorities and next steps in working toward peace in the region.

The visit is seen as an early step in the negotiation process. He also called for an immediate cessation of the Palestinian Authority's payments to terrorists and their families, which, he said, is "something that only encourages terror".

Trump has made plain that he has certain concrete expectations of all sides - i.e, Israel's limiting settlement building and the PA's cutting of payments to terrorists' families - and has hinted that he asked moderate Sunni Arab states to make "gestures of normalization to Israel", Shapiro said. "And my guess is they won't", he said.

Kushner appeared eager to promote change in government, saying that he was warned that the federal bureaucracy would resist his efforts.

The White House communications blitz on his agenda certainly helps reinforce that these issues take time, weeks and months and years, in some cases, to work through.

Trump has deputized Kushner and Greenblatt with leading the US efforts at Middle East peace.
