  • Suspect named in London mosque attack

The driver who crashed his van in a pedestrian lane near the mosque in Finsbury Park was revealed to be 47-year old Darren Osborne.

The BBC was among other media which identified the man arrested as Osborne, while London's Metropolitan Police said it would not name the suspect until he was charged.

Met Police Commissioner Cressida Dick said the incident was "quite clearly an attack on Muslims", and there would be more police, including armed officers, in the area, "particularly around religious establishments". Eight people injured were taken to three separate hospitals.

"He has further been arrested for the commission, preparation or instigation of terrorism, including murder and attempted murder", Scotland Yard police headquarters said in a statement.

'He has a fracture in his skull - but they still don't know why the bleeding from his ear is not stopping yet, ' the Somali-born man said.

"We have a witness saying that the guy who did what he did, the driver of the van, said 'I did my bit, ' which means he's not mentally ill", Kacimi said.

The Finsbury Park Mosque said the van "deliberately mowed down Muslim men and women leaving late evening prayers" at the mosque and the nearby Muslim Welfare House shortly after midnight.

She later visited Finsbury Park Mosque where she held talks with faith leaders.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan, the first Muslim to serve in that position, urged residents to focus on their shared values and to stand together during this an unprecedented period in the capital's history.

"We pushed people away from him until he was safely taken by police".

However, his mother Christine said her son was not a terrorist and had never shown any hatred towards Muslims.

If it is confirmed as an attack, it would appear to be one in which anti-Muslim operators adopt the tactics of Islamist terrorists.

Vehicles have also been also used to attack the public on London's Westminster Bridge, in Nice, France, and in Berlin.

London police say one suspect has been detained in an apparent early-morning attack on worshippers standing outside a mosque.

The Muslim Council also demand more security for the worshipping spaces, having stated that the earlier attack was another extreme demonstration of Islamophobia.

"I saw him on the news and I thought "Oh my God" that is my neighbour".

"This is an extraordinary city of extraordinary people", May said outside Downing Street after chairing an emergency government meeting.
