London tower toll rises to 79

The ferocious blaze that gutted a London high-rise last week and left 58 people presumed dead was a "preventable accident" that followed "years of neglect" from the government, the city's mayor said Sunday.

"The Prime Minister is very aware that people want answers promptly and we want to get this going promptly", said the spokeswoman.

Metropolitan Police Commander Stuart Cundy said the figure included the previous death toll of 30, reports the Independent. He said that the search and recovery operation in the 24-story Grenfell Tower continues, and it has been incredibly distressing for families. Metropolitan Police Stuard Cundy said: "Sadly, our work will be ongoing for many, many weeks".

Cundy said the police investigation into the blaze would look at the building and its refurbishment in 2016 and vowed to prosecute people "if there is evidence".

Cundy has promised to share with relevant authorities any issues that need to be addressed immediately to protect public safety.

"I do think there will be some change to that number", Cundy said.

A massive fire had engulfed Grenfell Tower in North Kensington last week, killing many people and injuring several others, many of whom are in critical condition.

"Equally, there may be people who thankfully may have managed to escape the fire and for whatever reason have not let their family or friends or police know", he said.

The PM has faced criticism this week for her reaction to the Grenfell Tower tragedy for not speaking to residents on her first visit to the scene.

Distressed women were seen hugging after the silence.

The death toll rose yesterday and is expected to increase as more people are identified.

"Until we do that, we can not look at anything other than staying with the same advice".

And May said that support for families "who needed help or basic information in the initial hours" following the disaster "was not good enough", according to the Press Association.

"In our meeting at Downing Street, we explained to the prime minister the anger of all residents towards the management of the estate over a long period of time, paving the way to this tragedy", the group said.

One image shows a bathroom, with a blackened sink and bathtub and broken tiles.

The remnants of an exercise bike, an oven and washing machine point to the lives of residents in the moments before the blaze.

The tower block, built in the 1970s, had 120 flats and was home to between 400 and 600 people.
