McIlroy, Day to miss US Open cut

The U.S. Open is known for putting a premium on par, even as the USGA tries to convince golf fans that it's not preoccupied with par. The next one went long, he chipped up to 12 feet and took two putts from there.

But only for a couple minutes.

McIlroy has birdied three of his last four holes. It doesn't have much history, "but everybody had to start somewhere".

Low amateur: Scottie Scheffler was the low amateur for the U.S. Open. As the pro golfer prepares to defend his championship title, he reflected on the a year ago by sharing another Instagram photo holding his U.S Open trophy. Vijay Singh was the last player to accomplish the feat in 2003 at Olympia Fields. The 44 players who broke par in the opening round set a U.S. Open record that had stood since there were 39 subpar rounds at Medinah in 1990. Thomas' 9-under 63 was one better than Johnny Miller's 63 in the 1973 final round at Oakmont.

Brandt Snedeker, Players Championship victor Kim Si-woo, Xander Schauffele and amateur Cameron Champ are also two shots back at five under. He was at 11 under, two shots ahead of Charley Hoffman and Tommy Fleetwood. Or at your home course.

Fowler, the ninth-ranked player in the world, was a stroke out of the lead, following his opening 65 with a 73.

It didn't work all that well. He missed the 15-footer.

Just like that, Casey is 4 over for the day and now five shots out of the lead.

Paul Casey is looking to recover from another triple bogey. 1, 2 and 3 all missed the cut in a major.

Dustin Johnson had to gouge it out of the rough on at least eight occasions, including the par-5 14th hole when he tried to play conservatively and laid up into rough.

Johnson, who arrived late at Erin Hills following the birth of his second child on Monday, will now have extra time to spend with his infant son after returning a 73 for four-over.

He also said he might have been rattled by starting out Thursday afternoon knowing that Rickie Fowler had already posted a 65.

The 26-year-old Reed had eight birdies and one bogey. So it made a decision to trim the thickest rough on the fourth, 12th, 14th and 18th holes.

OK, this is his first U.S. Open.

And despite carding four birdies in his last six holes for a 71 on Friday, the four-time major victor saw his own pre-event prediction come true, having said on Tuesday that anyone who could not hit the wide fairways "might as well pack your bags and go home".

Casey, Koepka, Harman and Fleetwood have yet to tee off. He two-putted for birdie, and he rolled in a 25-foot birdie putt on the 17th.

He three-putted on No. 13.

The 28-year-old model announced the birth on Instagram with a sweet family photo snapped at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Charley Hoffman is joining the jam-packed crowd near the top of the U.S. Open leaderboard.

Fowler, who held a one shot advantage overnight, cruised through an error free front nine that included two birdies. It took a hard turn to the right and rolled in. He grabbed his putter and pointed it out to his left just as the ball dropped into the cup. He followed his 71 from yesterday with a 74 on Day 2. And Day was even worse off, a 75 leaving him tied for 150th.

Scheffler is three shots back of the lead on a jam-packed leaderboard.

"Show up for the last six holes, anyway", McIlroy said. Champ tees off later Saturday. From there, the Aiken native required a handful of shots to get to the green en route to a double bogey - a definite no-no on a par-5. Former U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson shot a 71, though he was still seven shots behind.

Koepka had the lead until he turned a birdie chance into a bogey on the par-5 first hole after making the turn.

Still to be determined was who made it to the weekend, and where the cut would fall. They are still about three hours away from teeing off.

"You get going in that hay, and you can't get out of it". "And to play well today on top of it was extra special".

But that's not all that makes the possibilities so limitless Saturday.

In all, eight of the top 12 players in the world missed the cut, including Henrik Stenson, Alex Noren, Jon Rahm, Justin Rose and Adam Scott.

But the Englishman now has a share of the lead at the U.S. Open.
