MEXICO DRAW: It was not the result we wanted -Ronaldo

  • Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo was rumoured to be considering a move

Chile left it late to edged out a dogged Cameroon side in an opening Group B clash that saw striker Eduardo Vargas have goals both ruled out and given by the video assistant.

The goals were scored by Portugal's Ricardo Quaresma (34th minute) and Cedric Soares (86th minute), and Mexico's Javier Hernandez (42nd minute) and Hector Moreno (90th minute).

Another defensive error led to Mexico's equaliser just before the break as Raphael Guerreiro lost sight of Raul Jiminez's cross and Carlos Vela popped the ball back across for Hernandez to head in.

Mexico claimed a 2-2 draw with Portugal in their Confederations Cup opener on Sunday with a last-gasp equaliser by Hector Moreno.

Cristiano Ronaldo was kept out of the media spotlight in the wake of Portugal's 2-2 Confederations Cup draw on Saturday.

Both teams are trailing hosts Russian Federation in Group A, who beat New Zealand 2-0 in the tournament opener on Saturday.

As is often the case, Ronaldo thundered his set-piece straight at the wall after lining up for it, but showed excellent skill to crack a left-foot shot at goal in the aftermath that bounced back off the bar. His goal in the 91st minute was also referred to the video assistant referees - presumably to check on another possible offside - but it stood.

His 30-metre strike bounced off the bar and Nani hammered the ball home but the referees disallowed the effort for an offside infringement earlier in the move.

The second half started in a similarly cautious vein as the first, but came to life in the latter stages, with defender Cedric giving Portugal the lead on 86 minutes after Mexico failed to clear the danger in their box.

Portugal had the ball in the net early on after a Cristiano Ronaldo volley crashed off the crossbar and eventually reach Pepe to score.

"If this is going to happen several times during a game, well it's not very pleasant for the players, " Cameroun coach Hugo Broos said.Count Vidal among the current skeptics. "I have a pact with the players and we treat these personal matters away from the national team".

The news of his possible departure attracted the attention of global media covering Portugal at the eight-nation competition that serves as a warm-up for next year's World Cup.

'We are calm and we have to think about the next game.
