Michelle Carter, Who Texted Her Boyfriend To Kill Himself, Is Found Guilty

  • Michelle Carter Found Guilty of Involuntary Manslaughter for Urging Boyfriend to Suicide

Roy took his own life in June of 2014 by using a generator to fill his pickup truck with carbon monoxide in a Fairhaven parking lot.

Carter's attorney argued she was a troubled, delusional young woman who was "dragged" into the suicidal journey of Roy, who was long intent on killing himself.

Mr Moniz presided over the two-week trial in Bristol Juvenile Court after Carter, now 20, waived her right to a jury trial and pleaded not guilty. She faces up to 20 years in prison and will be sentenced on August 3.

"The evidence actually established that Conrad Roy caused his own death by his physical actions and by his own thoughts", Cataldo said. Through the course of the trial dozens of Facebook and text messages sent by Carter to Roy were made public, most of which revolved around Carter encouraging Roy to commit suicide. Lynn Roy spoke to CBS' 48 Hours about the conviction of her son's former girlfriend. She allegedly calmed his fears; helped him research suicide methods; cajoled him to go through with his plans when he got cold feet and lied to police, family and friends in order to enable the 18-year-old's final act.

The mother also said in the interview that she didn't believe Carter had a conscience or a moral compass because of the role she played in Conrad Roy Jr.'s suicide.

Carter's lawyer, Joseph Cataldo, argued that Roy was determined to kill himself and nothing Carter did could change that. I'm not saying they want you to do it but I honestly feel like they can accept it. He ruled that Carter, now 20, can remain free on bail but ordered her not to make any contact with Roy's family and not to leave the state.

At one point, Conrad - who detailed his struggle with anxiety and depression in a video prior to his suicide - got out of his auto, but his girlfriend pushed him into getting back in.

In his verdict, Moniz said he did not take into account Roy's previous suicide attempts. "But it's just not a homicide". "Losing a child, I will live with this forever - the pain". A MA judge ruled that she was guilty of involuntary manslaughter after she texted her boyfriend instructions on how to kill himself.

Carter cried when Moniz read the verdict and others in the courtroom sobbed.

There is no law in MA making it a crime to encourage someone, or even to persuade someone, to commit suicide.

"This conviction exceeds the limits of our criminal laws and violates free speech protections guaranteed by the MA and U.S. Constitutions", Matthew Segal, legal director at the ACLU of MA, said in a statement.

Medwed said the judge could consider Carter "morally blameworthy", but "moral blame doesn't always equal legal accountability".
