  • Proposed DUP deal would not undermine Good Friday Agreement, insists May

Theresa May has insisted a proposed deal with the DUP to prop up her minority Government will not be allowed to undermine the Good Friday Agreement.

Barring a "unanimous decision" to extend the time available, the Minister said, a withdrawal agreement must be in force by March 2019 to ensure an "orderly" withdrawal of Britain from the EU.

She repeated that Sinn Féin wanted to reach agreement but one that was based on equality, respect and integrity.

The former Northern Ireland First Minister said her meeting with Mr Varadkar was very good and that she was looking forward to a very positive relationship with the Irish premier.

Turning to the talks between the pair, Mr Varadkar - who has only been in his post for five days - said he had been concerned about the Tory DUP deal.

Speaking before she entered talks with the new Fine Geal Leader, Foster threw down the gauntlet to Sinn Fein and said her party were "ready to dance" in order to restore a power sharing executive up North.

The participants have until June 29 to reach a deal that would see devolution returned or they face the prospect of direct rule being reimposed from Westminster.

The anticipated arrangement has forced the United Kingdom government to reject suggestions its commitment to act with impartiality in Northern Ireland - as set out in the 1998 Good Friday Agreement - will be fatally undermined by any pact with the DUP.

Ireland's communists were engaged in a series of discussion forums with disillusioned Irish republicans, Mr McCartan revealed, arguing for "people's anti-imperialist politics" as the alternative to both Sinn Fein reformism and a return to militarism.

He believed that the Stormont power-sharing arrangements would be re-established over the summer between the DUP and Sinn Fein, but with the DUP in an even stronger position than before.

Mr Varadkar said: "It does emphasise the strength and closeness of the relationship between our two countries".

"Not only do a huge majority of people in Northern Ireland want to see abortion made available to women and girls in the tragic circumstances of sexual crime or fatal foetal diagnosis, but they also want to see abortion decriminalised and dealt with through healthcare policy".

"We are working away at them and will continue to work away at them".

O'Neill told reporters outside the Dail they are also committed to getting a government up and running in the North.
