President Trump's lawyer Jay Sekulow says the president is not under criminal investigation. He made similar comments in three other TV appearances last Sunday.

Sekulow concluded that the president can't be investigated for obstruction of justice, because he had full authority to fire Comey - something the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director himself pointed out in his testimony.

Schiff said he doesn't buy the idea, floated by Trump ally Newt Gingrich, that the president can not commit obstruction by firing the Federal Bureau of Investigation director, who serves at the president's pleasure.

Sekulow says that Trump hasn't been notified of any investigation.

Most Republicans were happy to see Mueller take over the investigation after Comey was sacked because it allowed them to redirect politically fraught questions about Russian Federation to the special counsel's office.

"Political interference with an ongoing investigation, regardless of what the President's lawyer may say, could make the President a target, a subject, a person of interest", Blumenthal said. In fact, to the contrary.

During Comey's June 8 testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee, where he testified that Trump pressed him to drop the FBI investigation into former White House aide Michael Flynn, Comey said, "Lordy, I hope there are tapes".

Sekulow has publicly criticized Comey, whom Trump fired.

"Why don't you just pick up the phone and call Bob Mueller and ask whether or not your client has any role in their investigation?" "No, he's not being investigated!"

President Trump is now in the grip of this situation. In the subsequent furor over Comey's dismissal - largely stoked by Trump's conflicting reasons for firing the director, which first adopted but then parted company with Rosenstein's memo - Rosenstein appointed Mueller as special counsel. "There is no investigation", he added. According to the Post, Mueller plans to interview both officials soon, and also plans to question Richard Ledgett, who until recently held the No. 2 job at the NSA.

On Monday, though, senior adviser Kellyanne Conway advised the public to not pay attention to the words in the tweet, because even though Trump appeared to fully admit that's he's being investigated, Conway said, well, he's not.

"Trump has a compulsion to counterattack".

Trump tweeted a notice that Sekulow was appearing on the morning show, but then deleted the post. "#MAGA", Trump tweeted on June 15.

Trump's attorney repeated the same statements on NBC's "Meet The Press".

Friday is the deadline set by the House Intelligence Committee for the White House to produce "any White House recordings or memoranda of Comey's conversations with President Trump (that) now exist or have in the past". To register your answer to that question, scroll down and take the poll below on this page. "They're essentially engaging in a scorched-earth litigation strategy that is beginning with trying to discredit the prosecutor". Marco Rubio said Sunday that he does not expect Trump to seek to fire them.

Meanwhile, other sources have said that the President is indeed under investigation for the highly unconventional firing of the FBI Chief.

"To fight the notion that Mueller would be looking at this at all seems to be something that only the president wants to be not true", Cuomo said.

Although administration officials downplayed the situation and said they "would not be concerned" about a back channel, national security experts expressed alarm at the development, pointing out that while back channels are indeed normal, it was not normal to ask to use the facilities of a hostile foreign power to conduct such communications. Sekulow also spoke to Jake Tapper on CNN's "State of the Union" and Chris Wallace on "Fox News Sunday". Indeed, it would be negligent for us not to investigate.

Senator Angus K of ME said, "A lot of people have asked, when will we be done?"

Sekulow, a conservative activist and radio talk-show host, earlier this month joined Trump's legal team, which is led by Marc Kasowitz.

The bipartisan measure, approved 98-2, now awaits action by the House.

Consider Trump's response to James Comey's dramatic Senate testimony.
