Turkey's Erdogan says isolating Qatar will not solve crisis

  • Turkey disapproves of sanctions on Qatar Erdogan

The lira eased 0.73 percent to 3.5400 against the dollar after officials from the ruling AK Party and the nationalist opposition told Reuters about the planned legislative step in support of Qatar.

Turkey's parliament on Wednesday ratified two deals on deploying troops in Qatar and training the nation's gendarmerie forces.

The Turkish parliament was also set to bring forward approval of a draft accord between the two countries on military training cooperation, the officials said.

It was President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan who said a day earlier that the sanctions announced by a number of Saudi-led countries against Qatar were wrong and Ankara would continue to improve its good relations with Doha. The military deals will allow Turkish military forces to be deployed in Qatari territory and allow Turkish gendarmerie forces to train Qatari gendarmerie forces in Qatar.

President of non-profit Qatar's Friends Group, Bekir Cantemir in a speech drew parallels between the 2013 coup in Egypt, the 2016 coup attempt in Turkey and what is happening in Qatar, accusing foreign powers of trying to destabilize the region.

"It will not contribute to solving any problem to try and isolate Qatar, which we know for sure has fought very effectively against terrorist groups", he said on Tuesday following a dinner.

Both bills, which were drawn up before the spat erupted, are expected to be approved by the Ankara parliament on Wednesday.

As a key ally, Turkey will send out troops to the military base where the USA holds the largest air base in the Middle East.

Qatar has insisted that the allegations of its neighbours are "baseless" and called for dialogue to resolve this issue.

The Turkish ambassador to Qatar Ahmet Demirok told AFP previous year the base would eventually be home to up to 3,000 troops or possibly more "depending on the needs".

Erdogan, who has sided with Qatar against Saudi Arabia in supporting the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt and Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip, had previously held his silence on the crisis.

A total of 150 troops have already been stationed at the base, according to Turkey's Hurriyet newspaper.
