  • Terror attacks and fire tragedy Britain s time of tumult

London police said Saturday that 58 people are assumed dead in the fire, and that the number could rise with many people still missing.

He said: "There is understandable anger and frustration, you've seen that from those living in the tower block, people living in other similar situations".

Cundy said the police investigation into the blaze would look at the building and its refurbishment in 2016 and vowed to prosecute people "if there is evidence".

British Prime Minister Theresa May, criticized shortly after the blaze for failing to meet with victims, says the public inquiry looking into the tragedy will report directly to her.

He also sidestepped questions over whether he felt guilty about the tragedy, telling BBC Radio 4's The World At One: "I feel awful about the whole position we find ourselves in".

Weakened by a botched election gamble last week, May has been criticised for her muted response to the fire and had to be rushed away from a meeting with residents on Friday under heavy police guard as protesters shouted "Shame on you".

A second protest began later at Britain's Home Office, which oversees fire prevention and policing nationally.

"They feel the government and local council haven't done enough to help them in the aftermath of this horrific incident, or to provide answers to their increasingly urgent questions", Khan wrote.

None of these properties are in tower blocks.

Latimer Road Tube station is closed and some London Underground services in the area have been suspended due to renewed concerns about the structural safety of Grenfell Tower following Wednesday's fire.

Experts say the cladding and the insulation it contained seems to have spread the flames quickly along the exterior of the building, overwhelming safety devices like fire doors.

Residents say they were ignored and want the government to take responsibility.

May who has promised $6.4 million for emergency supplies, food and clothing, has also announced a judge-led inquiry into the disaster.

She said "a good half" of the building had yet to be searched in detail, adding: "It is the upper floors which will be more challenging and will need some additional shoring up for us to be able to get in there". British health authorities say that 19 fire survivors are still being treated at London hospitals, and 10 of them remain in critical condition.

Mrs May said she had fixed a deadline of three weeks for everybody affected to be rehoused locally. Earlier in the day, the 91-year-old monarch described the country's mood as "somber" but insisted that Britain remained resolute during a hard time.

On Friday, Elizabeth and Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, visited the area and met residents and community representatives.

The family's lawyer Maria Cristina Sandrin said: "I've heard the recording of Gloria talking to her mother and there is no hope to find them alive".

His family said in a statement that Alhajali "came to the United Kingdom because he had ambitions and aims for his life and for his family".
