The Swedish carmaker has been using Nvidia's AI system in semi-autonomous vehicles from 2017.

The three companies will work together with Zenuity, a newly formed automotive software development joint venture equally owned by Volvo Cars and Autoliv, to develop next-generation self-driving vehicle technologies.

Volvo and Nvidia had previously partnered for Volvo's "Drive Me" autonomous auto pilot program, but this is the first time the two have announced a partnership aimed at commercial sales of vehicles.

Early Tuesday morning, June 27, NVIDIA and Volvo announced that they are redoubling their self-driving system efforts by teaming with a number of other companies to develop and distribute a proprietary autonomous AI platform by the start of the next decade, Engadget said. Volvo and Auto have formed a 50-50 automotive software called Zenuity to develop driverless vehicle technologies.

BMW has also joined the race by partnering with Intel and Mobileye.

The major player among the three companies with regard to self-driving technology is Nvidia. Their work with Nvidia will focus on developing their systems to "Level 3" autonomy, where drivers can give over control, but must be ready and able to resume manual driving at any moment. That means NVIDIA's technology will potentially make its way into many other cars, not just Volvos.

Volvo already has been working closely with Autoliv and Nvidia on the automaker's Drive Me autonomous driving pilot program to test a fleet of 100 self-driving XC90s on the streets of Gothenburg, Sweden, starting this autumn. IT experts at Volkswagen's data lab have been exploring the possibilities to use deep learning in both corporate and mobility services.

"Artificial intelligence is the key to the digital future of the Volkswagen Group", said Dr. Martin Hoffman, chief innovation officer of the Volkswagen Group. Nvidia's Drive PX platform will form the basis of a self-driving system that integrates front cameras and radar developed by ZF and Hella to include safety certification for mass deployment.

- With virtually every major auto manufacturer dumping R&D money into the field, it looks like autonomous vehicles are going to be a thing whether we want them to or not.

"AI is the most powerful technological force of our era", said Jensen Huang, CEO and founder of Nvidia. "Nvidia's deep learning solutions will enable Volkswagen to turn the enormous amounts of information in its data centres into valuable insight, and transform its business".
